It's great to be in Europe and able to watch the whole match.
Been a great match so far, mostly dominated by bowlers until Agar came out - breaking all kinds of records.

Think he declared far too early first time around. Plenty of time left in the game, they were never really going to be able to enforce the follow on with just 327 to defend.
There was an easy 600+ on offer before the end of day 2 and England would really have had their work cut out toget there.
The 2nd one was really a result of the 1st. Australia should never have put themselves in the position where it was likely they needed to bad again.
Far too early on the first one though was the killer.

At 7 down there was no guarantee of getting more runs. Starc and Haddin might have got out next ball. It was a declaration of timing in the day and the match knowing that there was rain coming. No team could have won that test... pitch was too good and weather was too poor.
Also, Panesar takes over from Warner.

It is time for some BIRD
Ryan Harris needs to rest, if he breaks down, it will be a massive loss.
and I reckon the massive is an understatement.
Also, Bird needs experience for the return series here.
Imagine a the bowling attack of Bird, Watson, Siddle, Harris
The run-rate would be close to 2 p.o..
If only they could bat like starc [which is why he keeps getting a spot]

I'm glad Cook is out.
That wicket was karma for batting the most boring innings in living memory. Left one too many.
Actually, he left about 120 too many.

brilliant batting from both watson and rogers.
not so much khawaja, warner or clarke
khawaja clearly not ready for test cricket - hughes should come in @ 3, averaging 62 this year in FC.

Away on holiday so missed most of it. Saw our disasterous first innings as I was getting on the plane. Was postive at lunch yesterday and then dissapointed by the end of day score.
Just seen day 3 score now and very pleased. Looks like Bell will win another test for us. Should be able to put on another 150 with what we have left and then win the test.
Wish we would stop going 3 down before we bother playing mind you

Glad to see your 'feeling' positive at least, though I think it is still to close to call maybe Australia will take 5 quick wickets in the first session like England did. If Bell and prior go in the first half hour, like Haddin and Rogers anything is still possible

Considering Cook as captain, he'll wait until they are 450 up and declare ..
:D if they stay that long..
I don't see Australia knocking them all over if Bell is still there.
This is Bell's ashes, not England's.

Bell is the only capable batsmen left. I reckon they can get the other 5 quickly and maybe Bell if he tries to up his scoring rate.

There is speculation that Khawaja will be dropped for Phil Hughes?
Thoughts?
I am a fan of Hughes but he always seems to crack under the pressure of test cricket, very consistent in FC Cricket though.

I think it has to be done... Khawaja hasn't done well. A 50 and no other score over 25. I am a fan of Khawaja - but he just seems to have no idea against England.

Some speculation that they will pick Agar to bat at six - can believe that only Warner, Rogers and Clarke are sure picks. Everyone else in contention including Wade as just a batsman.
On the plus side that is one or two more confirmed batting places than the start of the series

That would be hilarious, brought in as a number 11 and spinner and turns out to be a middle order batsman (and not much of a spinner)
The only person who can really come out with asny credit from a batting point of view of the whole series is probably Rogers (excluding Warner since he missed the first 2)
Hard to tell if the rest lack the ability or just the bottle, though there is certainly a bit of both in there based on last test.

Re: 2013 Ashes

Lineup will be the same as last test batting wise with the exception of Khawaja out and Hughes in. That is of course if Watson is fit.
The fact that England aren't winning these matches convincingly would worry me if I was an English supporter. Sure, there was 1 clear victory, but it could very easily be 3-1 to Australia with good weather and just 1 more decent innings.
-
Re: 2013 Ashes
By madmonk - 19-08-2013 01:21
Concern - yes
Surprise - no
We've long had a problem with compacency in the side, hopefully having a closer series than might have been expected, several senior players underperforming (Cook, Trott, Prior) and youngsters yet to establish themselves (Bairstow, Root) means there is room for improvement. For all the fuss over the pitches favouring the England bowlers compared to Australia, I don't think they suit our batsmen who may enjoy the pitches more in the reverse series (certainly Cook and Trott did last time).
There's also a fairly clear line of succession in most places:
Compton/Carberry top of the order (longer term probably Lees)
Taylor/Ballance middle order;
Onions, Tremlett, Finn pace bowling
Kerrigan spin
Woakes bowling all-rounder
Jury's out on some of them (I don't rate Woakes as a Test level bowler, think we're hoping Stokes develops there) but most have had some experience with the Lions or under a degree of pressure/expectation (as per Taylor in the tour match when Pieterson's fitness was in doubt).
We're probably also relying on you not finding 2-3 Test level batsmen within the next 5 months

Stupid ipad...
The batsmen we have in the team all have plenty of FC runs in Australia at good averages. In theory they are test level batsmen that have had a series similar to Cook and Trott. The problem is, we had no Bell this series.
-
Re: 2013 Ashes
By scruttino - 19-08-2013 10:17
Bell has score 3 centuries, 2 (I think) of them in an innings without another batsmen scoring a century. Given his past record this has been a break through series, before this he had over 30 ashes innings before he registered his first century.
So from an Aussie perspective just because a batsmen can seem hopelessly out sorts for a long time, does not mean he should be discarded. Persistence can pay long term dividends

Quite the opposite actually. Our top order have all proved (Root excepted) themselves as top class players over number of years.
The fact they have all had a slump and we have still won a series relatively comfortably despite being less than 70-3 on numerous occasions.
They are proven world class players and will bounce back, hopefully in the winter.

Re: 2013 Ashes

Horrible selection from the ECB though, I can understand wanting to give Kerrigan a try to see if he's ready, but Woakes as part of a 3-man pace attack? I get that they're hoping he'll be the next Bresnan as a 3rd/4th pace bowler who can bat at 7, but don't think there's a chance they made these picks if it was a live game. Also don't understand the experimenting with bowlers but lack of variation in the batting
Still suppose sometimes we have to go through this before the selection geniuses work it out (see Dernbach)

I don't think it's fair that if the DRS shows that the ball is going to hit the stumps that it isn't out. I understand the ball was pitched outside the stumps, but it sorta defeats the purpose of it being LBW if he's protecting a wicket like that.

Almost the perfect call their toss
About 5 session of play now lost, since we are in the 5th day and England are still their 1st innings, no result possible. Australia wins the toss twice, on both occasions pile on the runs in good time, then England erect a stone wall and it rains when they have the upper hand. That's cricket though
