It's great to be in Europe and able to watch the whole match.
Been a great match so far, mostly dominated by bowlers until Agar came out - breaking all kinds of records.

Why didn't Clarke bat? He needs just as much practice as the rest of them. Sure, he might need his rest (back issues, mental, etc), but he's not going to get better by sitting on the sidelines.

With his back problems he might get better by doing nothing.
And if he's not under so much pressure when he comes in he would prob make more runs.

Bird bowled beautifully. Hard to miss him for the next test.
Hard to see why he wasn't picked for the first test ahead of Starc.
Because he is a left hander.. he is better..?

Rumours that there will be a new look opening combination. Interesting.
Hopefully it will be Hughes + Warner, see what they can do.

Here we go...
I don't agree with the batting lineup, but the selections are decent. Maybe Bird over Starc (particularly because Starc will give Swann some rough to bowl into).
Good to win a toss, hopefully it changes the way we play mentally.

There are definitely problems with the review system in regards to overruling caught behinds like this.
Of course there won't be evidence if he hasn't hit it. Makes no sense

I'm gonna say it now... Match fixing? That was bullshit.

Erasmus did the same in the first test and ends up on field for 2 and 3.
Tony Hill did it in 2nd test and ends up on field in 3.
Dharmasena does it in the 3rd test... Maybe he wants a spot on field for the next test.
Maybe the 3rd umpire should be someone that knows the technology rather than an actual umpire.

Apparently snickometer can be ready to view in 5 second, they are planning to use it (or so the ABC Grandstand/BBC Commentary team are saying) in the return Australian leg of the ashes

Our batting has been pathetic, we decide we need to bring in reinforcement... and our saviour bats at six?!?!

You are absolutely spot on with that. Although I agree with the point Michael Vaughan made about 17 times - "it's not a problem with the technology, that's just human error"
On the positive side - GO CHRIS ROGERS!!! :D:D:D

But hotspot showed nothing and he ignored that. Snicko too often shows noises when there are none because the frame rate of these technologies is too low.
Bring in super slow mo... Would be much more useful than any of this stuff.

The umpiring in this series has been f***ing pathetic... only slightly better than an average association football match.

Well so much for that... they got that one right, Rogers was plumb.

Re: 2013 Ashes

Thank god, I thought he was going to give it there.
The noise was 2 or 3 frames later. He's using the technology as if he was an on field umpire.
Hotspot should be 90% of a decision like that.

Agreed. Wonder what the noise actually was though?

Re: 2013 Ashes

Could be anything...
Top of the handle (either just the grip or actual handle) hitting his wrist as the bat swings through
Could be his foot sliding over a bump in the ground (the mic is in the stumps).
The Khawaja 'decision' proved that snicko picks up sounds in the right frame. When his bat hit his pad, the sound and snicko both had it in the frame 2 or 3 before the ball went past the bat. So if the noise is late/early, it wasn't bat.

At least he was judging it in real time with no replays.
But it seems we're even now.
Good to see England the team without any reviews left.

I would put our much better start down to winning the toss. Totally different mindset and conditions when you win the toss.

Looks like a bit of a road. Not much in it. Australia to make 400-500. England to drop about 100 short.
Plenty of rain forecast for the weekend.
Ashes retained by Monday

England always seem to get rain when they are behind - happened in Australia a few times too. Should we say they haven't deserved an Ashes in 25 years?

Until that last replay I had no idea how he could have though he hadn't hit that. Clarke is at fault there, he should have seen the deviation.
I was hoping Warner was going to come out punching like Rocky Balboa when he was booed.

Re: 2013 Ashes

I think there was little chance of 4 innings on this pitch, so best option is to put a heap of runs on the board and try get England out twice. There is no other way to win a test on a pitch like this.

Re: 2013 Ashes

Dunno if that will work if we can't get one of these two out...

Not sure Peterson was out there - but the hotspot appeared as though it was on the back of the bat (which is not possible), so it looked like a reflection.

Can't recall any that broke rules and avoided punishment.

England aren't breaking any rules either. Just pushing them to the limit. Something Australians have done for years with great success.

There is a rule that says slow over rates are punishable by fines and suspension of the captain. I'm just hoping it's the latter.
Is it more that England don't think they are good enough to win the Ashes and they need to play for a drawn series?

A drawn series?
We're 2-0 up and Aus have had 1 good innings in 5 and haven't genuinely looked like winning a test comfortably.
I'd have fancied our chances of chasing down 350 on this. Shame about the rain. 4-0 should still be a formality though weather permitting.

Anything less than 4-0 would be embarrassing for England I would have thought.

I don't think so actually. Check the seam as it goes past his bat. It's sticking out towards his bat, the string has hit his bat and made the noise which was not enough to show up on England's budget hot spot cameras.
