An unexpectedly hard shot by Cliff Corrigan in the 18th minute of play forced U21 Mexico's goalkeeper Ángel Ogazón to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a rather tough play, U21 Mexico's Chico Liebrechts got a free kick in the 23rd minute. If Eduardo Cisneros had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 25th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 41 minutes into the game, Dom Lomas cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-1. Ángel Ogazón was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Isaac Orzaize could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 45th minute of the match, but Hugh Warburton made a huge save.

U21 Mexico made a substitution. Serafino Chico replaced Jeremias Harkaitz. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Dom Lomas to make the kick off. A hard shot by Dom Lomas from long distance, 73 minutes into the match, got Ángel Ogazón's attention. Through a fast twist with his body, he could stop the ball from going in on his right side. The supporters of U21 Mexico booed when U21 England was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 74 match minutes in a wonderful position. Brian Gray didn't get a good kick on the ball. U21 England's supporters crossed their fingers, but Felix Moody was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Ángel Ogazón made an important save on a dangerous shot by Felix Moody in the 90th minute. U21 England's Hugh Warburton played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Eduardo Cisneros in the 91st minute of play. Eduardo Cisneros fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 98th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Hugh Warburton having to interfere. U21 England's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
