How can we make England more competetive?

Badge image
Hello everyone,

I've been trying to start up something of a programe with robok212 on how we train our youths. Apparently lots of other small(er) countries are very successful.

As some of you know this is my second term as NC for England. I've seen some strange players out there.. guessing that their managers are inactive. Been left on PI and passing for instance.. ;-)

It would be very beneficial for all if we start training our youths the same way for our future NC/NCAs. I'd love to see England more competetive. Help me out on this one.

This is our average joe for this years u21 England: http://mzplayer.se/?id=0324103589&lang=2

Seeing this player, what are your thoughts? What would you like to improve? What would you change? How can we pull the strings to the same direction?

And if you really want to help out the U21 side, focus your training on players born in even seasons (players in odd seasons will always be a year under-age).

This is exactly why I made this thread Madmonk.
We all train our youths very differently and it helps out alot of we can give pointers on how to train.

Would you mind explaining abit more on how you train your youths?

I did not think of that :O

Sorry for the double post but I've made a decision about how I should proceed in building up my youths.

At first I wanted to get the maximum amount but when I receive the youths next season (Season 42) they'll all be 15 years old, thus born in Season 27.
As madmonk stated, players born in odd seasons will miss out on one season's worth of training.

Ofcourse I'm going to order a few youths for myself this season but I'm going to bring in the maximum amount of youths next season.

Ok a summary of my training on youths (some of it has been mentioned elsewhere).

I have coaches with 8 in keeping, 7 in power, 6 in quickness, shooting, checking, skating, stamina. You might have a puck more or less in various skills based on your own preferences, but I felt generally the class D coaches were best value. If you have a newer youth set up then you probably should use slightly cheaper coaches for a season or two until you need the more expensive ones.

The keeping you can really adjust based on what prospects you have, if your best youth keeper has <5 then you don't need an 8 coach for at least a season, if you have an ace 3rd year youth then you might want/need a better coach. I try to send my better keeping prospect to TC to train the more important secondaries for keepers or if there is a keeping package.

Otherwise (ie non-keepers), try to train power to 6 as soon as possible. If they max at 6 or lower then the only long term use is if they could convert to keeper (test using YTC when you have a 'no cost' slot spare, and cancel if it doesn;t feature keeping). Otherwise they never take up a TC spot again.

Always send players to TC for 5 weeks, if you're not sure about sending a player, wait until you have a 'no-cost' slot. This is about the only occasion where I use YTC and if I don't like the package I cancel immediately and give up on that player. If your player is any sort of decent prospect then choose the TC package for them, there are enough skills that are common to all positions that you should be able to find a package that will be useful in the long term.

Try to use TC spots that avoid less useful skills (passing, puck control, PI), and use TC to train the player's primary skills beyond your coach's ability (ie power once they are near or at 7). Once a youth player's skill reaches the same level as a coach then move them to another skill (you can check on the training graphs if they are maxed or not). I generally have better coaches (9+ skills) for my seniors who can finish off training in key skills for the better ex-youths.

Try to test as soon as possible skills that will determine how your player will develop (ie power for all players, stamina - if they max at 4 they only get TC if I have a spare slot after all the other players I want to train or ar an absolute beast as a youth, shooting if you are training as a forward, checking for a defender).

If you are training a defender who maxes early in checking, don't give up but see if they will convert to a forward, likewise a potential forward who maxes early in shooting can still become a good defender.

If you're looking to purely help the U21 NT then proritise everything towards your better players and leave anyone who has a maxing that will stop them getting there; if you want to compete in the Uxx cups/leagues then you will still need some of these for your own depth.

Alright, I'll try what you are doing now Madmonk. My team is out for sale so my next couple of seasons will be real weak. :-)

Thank you MadMonk for sharing us your experiences. I can confrirm that because I do it almost the same way and it is succesfull for me for really long term.
If We can bring thinking of as much managers to our level it will be success for future of any British team as well as for National team.
Good luck to all in future stars producing ;-)
