Premiership 2013/14

Here we go, men. The start of the Premier League season is days away.

I will be at Anfield for the early kick off; beer first half, bovril second half. Always. Probably play out a draw against Mark Hughes' free flowing Stoke outfit.

What are you fine gents saying about the ensung season then? Chelsea will win it says I. United, Citeh, Arsenal completing the top four. Spurs will lose Bale to Madrid shortly but still beat Liverpool to 5th in another forgetful season for us.

Cardiff, Hull and Palace straight back down I reckon. Though I would more so enjoy it if Villa, West Ham or Stoke were to in fact fall.

Hurrah. Football.

If he got a card for diving Dzeko would have got one too and Zabaleta would have been sent off later in the game.

Suarez didn't deserve to be on a yellow in the first place.

Chelsea play like a bottom of the ladder team. I've seen Stoke play more exciting football.

As much as I hate City, I'd rather see them win the title than Chelsea purely for the fact they play football.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

LMFAO as a hardcore Chelsea fan I have one thing to say... "it doesn't have to be pretty"...

the thing is, so many teams have gone to anfield and been extremely "brave" and come back with nothing, if you play 36 games in the season and are brave for everyone of them and come the end of the season you get relegated, no one thinks about your bravery, when Ali fought foreman and did the rope-a-dope, he was a genius, what is the difference between that and what Chelsea do.

Pound for pound, playing pretty football, we cannot match them, I know that, they know that. the only team in the league that can do that against them is Man City, and the tried that last week, what was the outcome?
we don't talk about how well or how brave city were, we talk about Liverpool winning, we talk about Coutinho's winner. but the truth is, for long periods of that game, city looked more likely to win.

Jose knows he is never going to out play them, he does what the lesser teams in the league do to us, sit, and ask Liverpool the question, you say you are tittle contenders, can you break us down? and I believe we got the answer today.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
And will we talk about how Chelsea play anti-football (0-0 with United, Arsenal, Atletico come to mind) when they come away with no trophies? I'd say so.

What's the point of buying players like Hazard, Salah, Willian etc if youre going to play 9-0-1?

Re: Premiership 2013/14thy

this wasn't the same as Atletico. They actually went for the victory today and they got it.

Did you watch it? Time wasting from minute 1 and not even trying to score with good opportunities. They got lucky for the first goal and only went for the 2nd goal because there were no defenders, they would have stopped and wasted time if there was a defender.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
Yes, I watched it. Cole had a good chance early on. All of this anti football talk is nonsense. getting all three points is all that matters for any club

Re: Premiership 2013/14

As much as i am a huge fan of well played football, Mourinho did exactly what was needed here and showed his class, why he gets paid the big bucks. He was playing this game for days ahead. When the teams hit the field, there was a comment that its actually not that weak a team, certainly not as weak as the Liverpool players would have been expecting. Mourinho mind games, and putting the young lad in the back 4 would have only helped make the liverpool players even more over confident, depsite the fact he knew there would be 6 -8 players defending at any given point in the game.
The other factor was the 'rousing' rendition of you'll never walk alone before kick off, Anfield had an atmosphere of total complacency, like they had already won the league, and to be fair if they had won this game they would have, so that shit should have been saved for the final whistle, not the first one.
Chelsea are not the first team to arrive at Anfield this season and try to defend, but they have been on e of the very few good enough to succeed at it. There is no doubting Liverpool quality, but they were out foxed for this game, and could well not win the title because of it.
Like i said im not a fan of anti football, but i see it regularly stop Sunderland from winning games at home as we dont have the quality to break down an average team putting 10 men behind the ball, and while Liverpool are obviously a class above in terms of skill in playing attacking football, so are Chelsea when it comes to defending, but they also have the quality to break through if needed.

i agree wit both navai and tosspot, in so much as It truly doesnt have to be pretty as a wins a win, im sure any Liverpool fan would have taken that result if their shirts had been swapped, and i agree with tosspot, as id prefer to see Man City win the title if Liverpool dont, but seeing as they are still 2 points clear there is nothing stopped them from still taking it out and any thoughts of it being over after this result are ridiculous, they should hit the training field and get used to beating a 10 man defense cos they are away to Palace next.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
For Liverpool, the title is nothing but a bonus. City are in control now, though I'd say they have to get 9 points to win the title (7 may be enough if Liverpool can't get their 6).

I'd be interested to see how 2 teams going into a game with the Chelsea mentality would play out - would each team have their 11 players in their own half with the ball sitting on half way?

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
@ Toss, I Really don't mean this in a negative way but have you played the game to a decent standard? I played semi professionally representing my county (NOT country)

I can attest to the fact that its "easy" to attack, we had these drills where we'd have 6 v 5... 7 v 5 and even 8 v 5 the 5 being the defending team let me tell you, anyone who has played, and im not talking at pub level, I'm talking against really pacey wingers, midfielders who can open you up with one pass... its tough, you have to concentrate, I mean really concentrate to defend, and when the manager asks you to play in and with a specific shape its even worse, because as a footballer the natural thing is to get drawn into the ball and try and nick it but he has said, have a base of 3, with 2 sitting infront of them. who ever is closest, press, if they aren't in our half, don't press, they aren't hurting us ...

do you remember that great Team? I think it was the 74 team, the one that never won the world cup, they were arguably the most attacking team ever lived... but they didn't win it because they didn't know how to be tactically sound... fast forward to france 98' there were SO many teams which where far better than France, the eventually winners but their team not had balance, but were very tactically astute, I know we all want to see all out attack, believe me when Chelsea had philipe scolari as manager and they played that "samba" football, winning 8-1, 7-0 that was great, I was sitting in the living room fully aroused. but pepe won nothing..

jose will win 1-0 all season and atleast bring in a trophy every other season, which as grinner said, is why they pay him the top bucks, its not coincidence that out of the games against the top teams, he has won 16 out of a possible 18 points, you don't do that without knowing exactly what you are doing

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
Yeah, I get it... but he has a huge budget and huge roster of players that are capable of doing that and are getting paid hundreds of thousands of pounds a week to do that. That's not the issue.

Go listen to his post match after the 0-0 with West Ham... he complained about wasting time from the 1st minute (check), medical staff coming on all the time (check), long balls to no-one (check). He called it 'only 1 team came here to play football, only 1 team trying to win'. Everything he did is exactly what big Sam did against him...

How does that make him a better manager than Sam Allardyce?

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
because he gets the job done. As a city supporter, Pellegrini could learn from Jose. And Jose can still lead Chelsea to a double.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
For West Ham every game against a top club can be season defining, so they do what they have to do when they play them, the fact Mourinho chose to do this away to Liverpool is actually a huge compliment as he figured his team were not good enough to simply beat the current Liverpool side, and if West Ham can get 0-0 draw with Chelsea, then it stands to reason Chelsea could get a draw or better out of Liverpool using the same tactics. The only thing thats actually noteworthy is how much of a surprise it was to see a team of Chelsea's size and quality feel they had to do this to ensure a result, but then again their entire season was pretty much on the line.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
Nothing more satisfying than watching Chelsea get completely dominated by Atleti... And the reason they lost was purely down to Mourinho's inability to attack against good teams. Poor mentailiy, poor tactics and poor substitutions.

And he had no answer to being behind on aggregate. The goal from Adrian was worth 2 because of the first leg and they couldn't change the way they were playing.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

him and pep are going to have to check their egos at the door If they want to go all the way. Ancelotti and Simeone are dominating both of them

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Sunderland to stay up? Who'd a thunk it 3 weeks ago? Away to City, Chelsea and Man Utd, there an obvious 7 points for the bottom club LOL

Imo showed up how poor of a team Man Utd are atm, still dont believe Moyes was the problem there, just the quality of players they have.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Sunderland Vs West Brom - a draw would keep both teams in the EPL, prepare yourself for the most painful 90 minutes of "football" since Blackburn played Man Utd on the final day of the season.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
If we're honest, West Brom are already safe - no way Norwich can turn around 19 GD even if they win and WBA lose both their matches.

The pressure is off them so they might make Sunderland's day difficult.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

How did Liverpool blew it at Palace tonight? 3-0 up then 18 minutes to go it was 3-3 all :O but should be interesting last day of the season on Sunday.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

It's not going to be interesting. The league is City's and Norwich is getting relegated.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Oh Dear. You know what i wouldnt want to be about now? A Liverpool fan. I can almost hear the choking sounds being made by anyone near a pool fan today after that performance.

This game is one that will be remembered forever, the time Liverpool lost a 3-0 lead in 11 minutes will be right there alongside how Newcastle lost an 8 point lead in April to lose the title.

To be fair though they lost the title against Chelsea.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
Yeah not sure this has any affect. If City lose a game, we are in pole and if not we should finish 2nd.

Disgraceful effort from a few players today... Sturridge, Coutinho, Lucas. Really missing Henderson and squad depth.

Don't think that was ever in question... What I was getting at was that even the best defender in the league makes mistakes - potentially costly ones.

Skrtel has scored 7 goals - more than any other defender, some important ones too. He's also made some very good blocks and tackles. Bad decision in this case, but he's been one of the best defenders in the league this season.
Sakho has been pretty good. Needs to learn how to get header/shots on target.
Toure ruined our season in the space or a week or 2. The pass to Anichebe and the own goal.
Mignolet also had some shockers - pity because he's made some cracking saves too).

I know Agger has had some injuries... but he's barely played - no idea why.

Johnson needs to be sold or become a winger, he's a terrible defender these days. Put Flanagan on the right and Jose Enrique left when he's fit again.

If that's true, FFP is not a joke and City will likely be banned from all European competitions and that's probably enough to have points taken off in the league.

3 other teams as the article states could afford Messi's $205 million buy out clause. The Barca board clearly don't appreciate Messi. don't worry, Liverpool will win the league 24 years from now.

2 of those teams aren't cheating already (as far as we know).

Re: Premiership 2013/14

"cheating" You lads had to spend 90 million just to make the top four this year. And you'll have to spend more just to do well in Europe. Spending money isn't cheating. Simply outbidding another team for a player isn't cheating.

Spending money outside the rules is cheating. Never said spending money is cheating... Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, Barca, Real Madrid, Monaco, Bayern all do it within the limits set... why can't City and PSG?
