Premiership 2013/14

Here we go, men. The start of the Premier League season is days away.

I will be at Anfield for the early kick off; beer first half, bovril second half. Always. Probably play out a draw against Mark Hughes' free flowing Stoke outfit.

What are you fine gents saying about the ensung season then? Chelsea will win it says I. United, Citeh, Arsenal completing the top four. Spurs will lose Bale to Madrid shortly but still beat Liverpool to 5th in another forgetful season for us.

Cardiff, Hull and Palace straight back down I reckon. Though I would more so enjoy it if Villa, West Ham or Stoke were to in fact fall.

Hurrah. Football.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

I disagree - I think Liverpool have a real shot this season. They finally have a team of names where you can't really point out a major flaw and that's something I haven't even been close to thinking for years.

Mignolet, Johnson, Agger, Toure, Enrique, Lucas, Gerrard, Aspas, Coutinho, Sturridge, Suarez.

The depth is getting there as well - mostly young, but enough to fill gaps regularly... Skrtel, Luis Alberto, Sterling, Wisdom and (unfortunately) Allen. Possibly add Willian?

My predicitions:
1/2: Chelsea/City
3: Liverpool
4: Man Utd
5/6: Spurs/Arsenal (depending if Spurs sell Bale and Arsenal buy a striker)

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
West Ham will not go down! No way!

Man Utd to win, Chelsea 2nd, Liverpool 3rd, Tottenham 4th, Arsenal 5th, Man City 6th

Bottom 3 will be Cardiff, Villa and Palace (in no particular order)

Re: Premiership 2013/14

I can't disagree with any point you make, TP. Perhaps I have had a sense of scepticism worn in to me over the past few seasons. I agree that we are in far better shape than we have been for a long time, with a nicely balanced squad and dare I say - a little confidence.

JLA, I don't for one second think WHU will go down - to be honest it's just Big Sam I have irrational beef with. In fact I think West Ham will finish closer to the top half than the bottom.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Mwahahahaha. Cardiff to go down. Keep on underestimating...

Stoke ( shit manager ),Palace, Hull for me. Possibly Villa.

Ant: Premiership 2013/14

1. Chelsea
2. ManU
3. Liverpool
4. Tottenham

5. Arsenal
6. ???
7. ManCity

Re: Premiership 2013/14

There is always one team who take advantage of those who under-estimate them. Cardiff could be the one!

I have never been a fan of Stoke's football, but Tony Pullis installed them as a sfae PL team. Cleary the club have realised that's all you can be playing such a primitive style of football. But Mark Hughes isn't the man to change that. I echo the oppinion that he is not effective; I don't find his style of football or management attractive or able to overhaul a team that is used to a hoof and head philisophy.

Hopes : Tottenham to finish 1st, failing that a champions league spot.

Expectations : Tottenham to finish 5th on the last day of the season with a draw and Arsenal win their last game to finish 4th.

A cup would be nice, the Europa League would be nice, seeing as the champions from the end of this season go into the champions league automatically. Failing that the FA cup.

I don't see Cardiff going down, history would also suggest the play off winners usually stay up therefore can't see Palace going down. I think Stoke and Villa will go down along with Hull, Villa will rely heavily on Benteke, so if he stays injury free they have a chance. Otherwise, possibly Norwich in for a rough season. Stoke for the simple reason they have Hughes now, I don't rate him as a manager at all. I think he can get in good players, but I don't think he utilises them anywhere near their abilities. Look at QPR and Citeh.

At the top, has to be United and Chelsea, think with the money City have spent and their new manager, I see them near the top and competing for the title. Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool to compete for 4th, with Swansea a surprise contender for 4th as well.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Palace will go down due to having a bellend of a manager who has been unable to recruit players of the quality required.

Hull, well, Huddlestone was a decent signing for his passing but has less pace than a dead snail. Have made some ok-decent signings, but Bruce is a massively overrated manager.

Mark Hughes is a joke of a manager living off one good year with Wales. Which was surrounded by two of the worst ever.

We'll stay up, if for no other reason than Medel breaking legs of opposition players on a regular basis.

Might want to actually bother watching real football before making the comment. Medel has shown a hell of a lot of skill. Just pretty violent with it.

Violence comes from a lack of discipline. People that lack discipline are trying to make up for their lack of skill. I'm not talking isolate incidents - but someone known to be regularly violent.

Also, 'real' football is certainly not what Cardiff play. That's Sunday league style.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

All other ability aside, violence isn't a characteristic anyone should look for in their game. You could be Lionel Messi on the ball, but what good is that in the shower after 60mins.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Plus tackling to break legs makes you an absolute cretin.

Sunday leagues are where Heskey looks a star.

Not that you'd know anything about Cardiff or how we play.

Medel is an incredibly skillful player. Xavi recommended Barca go for him. He's also a hothead; though generally, if you researched and looked at the clips, usually his reaction has been when others point their finger in his face, which tends to result in a slap.

Suarez lacks discipline. Guess he lacks skill so he'll be in the A league next season.

Nice to see so many actually believing the "breaking legs" comment was intended seriously. He's a physical ball winning dog in midfield with the ability to get forward and contribute.

1/10 for the trolling effort.

We've signed promising / quality players with plenty of upside. You signed Carroll.

Palace, two from Stoke/Hull/Villa for me.

Let's look at the evidence, as Loyd Grossman used to say on Through the Keyhole.

West Ham fan.
Cardiff play West Ham first game of the season.
Last time that happened, Kenny Miller winner for Cardiff.
West Ham fan claims we'll finish bottom.

Nice effort, poor execution. Think it'll be a 1-1 draw tomorrow.

As soon as Cardiff went up I said they'll go back down.

Trolling i.e. making comments with the intention to wind people up and spark a reaction. Comments like these are usually said without any just reason and often have no real value of truth and are purely said to spark an argument or just wind someone up.

Or he means the other meaning to the word,

Maybe they will win, maybe not.

I can tell you one thing, that gobshite Nolan will go very quiet when Pitbull is around.

I know Model, I watch a fair bit of the Spanish league. He probably gets more cards than Barcelona do in a season. He is not their kind of player. Barcelona don't buy the same players Cardiff do.

I agree with you, Suarez acts out violently when his skill is not enough to do what he wants. His outbursts are far more rare than Mendel's because he's better.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

my City at 6th or 7th? have you gone mad? City/Chelsea = 1/2, Tottenham/Arsenal =3/4, 5/6 = Liverpool/United

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
Well for my 2 cents, i reckon, like most, that chelsea will take it out, not because of anything amazing he does, but the fact he will get more out of the team than Benitez managed and their major rivals also have entirely new managers, with entirely new management styles and philosophies. I would like to see Man Utd finish outside the top 3, and not sack Moyes.

1. Chelsea
2. Man City
3. Arsenal (if they can sign a top notch striker)
4. Man Utd
5. Liverpool (the rebuild is still going in the right direction imo)
6. Spurts (without Bale they will be mediocre once more)

Sunderland - God knows, they could be anywhere from 7th to 20th, but i hope Di Canio's newly instilled fitness and discipline regime sticks, and works. I would settle for better than last season, but as long as we play more attractive football im not overly worried. When its painful to watch your own team, something needs to change.

18. Crystal Palace (Holloway is a star, be a shame to lose him again, but he seems to have rotten luck at crunch time in the EPL)
19. Hull City (Crap team, crappier manager. Disappointed with how few ex Man Utd player are in their ranks yet, still a few weeks to go of the window yet i spose, and i hear Bryan Robson can still walk)
20. Stoke City (After escaping relegation last season by the skin of their teeth, they go and appoint one of the worst managers currently in the game. With no funds to overpay for shitty players, Hughes is already behind the 8 ball, so relying on getting the best out of a very average squad using nothing but his tactical nous and motivations skills is something akin to Paris Hilton appearing on 'Naked and Afraid'. Hilarious but pleasing to the eye, but confounding as she spends 20 of her 21 days trying to find a porter to carry her bags.

1 final comment to all who believe that we here in Aus dont know anything about the English game. Unlike you guys we get EVERY EPL game live, EVERY week, plus at least 3 Championship games and even some Blue Square games, so the idea that we wouldnt have ever seen Cardiff, or whoever get promoted play, is quite laughable.

Maybe, but Xavi clearly rates him. That speaks volumes. Medel would fill a role that imo Barca lack, that of a midfield enforcer.
I agree with you, Suarez acts out violently when his skill is not enough to do what he wants. His outbursts are far more rare than Medel's because he's better.
Suarez is upset because his racism and biting aren't tolerated in the civilised world. That, and carrying Liverpool.

Medel is going to have more outbursts due to his role. If you're in there to break up opposition attacks, win the ball then if you're doing your job well you'll do more of the niggly fouls, the crunching 50/50s.

Even so, perception isn't always reality. People lauded Watford for their style due to their views of Zola as a player. Ignored the fact they were more than capable of playing dirty - at CCS had two sent off against us, lucky not to have a third. One of the tackles a two footed lunge, both feet off floor on Peter Whittingham that sent him flying, lucky not to break a leg. Indeed, that game there were at least 4 clear yellows not given in the first ten minutes, all for fouls on Whitts, then our most creative player. Almost as if that passing side with the cultured manager had clearly targetted him.

Anyway, it will be fun to see Medel against Kevin Nolan. If there's one player I'd want him to crunch, it's Nolan. Well remember his "performance" against us at CCS a few seasons ago, bullying a spineless referee, leaving his foot in.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Medel starts!

Kimbo and Whitts both in the side, so the flair is definitely there. Tough test for young Declan John.

Good start for Cardiff lol... kept a clean sheet for almost 15 mins.

The Liverpool v Stoke match was a great start to the season.

Stoke's keeper kept the score right down and Mignolet saved a late penalty to keep the 3 points.

Are you a twelve year old by any chance? If not, you really wouldn't be "in my face" because you'd find either my fist or head were placed into yours with great velocity...

I suppose by your contorted logic Arsenal and Swansea will also be going down? And that you'll be in the CL?

A draw would have been the best I'd have hoped for with no Cornelius, an 18 yr old left back replaced suspended Taylor and the baffling decision to pick Connolly over Brayford. Not much provided from out wide. Few more signings should occur hopefully.

That, or we got simmed.

All those names strike fear into the opposition...

For Cardiff to hope for anything more than a desperate relegation fight is just silly.

Arsenal got unlucky with the red card and one of the penalties - but they were still awful and don't look like a side capable of anything better than 6th unless they bring in some better players.

Can we keep this thread away from threats of violence, lads?

Excellent day at Anfield for me. Celebrated Mignolet's save more than the goal. Superb. Coutinho was sheer class and Kolo was exceptional. Positive but should have been 2 or 3.

I will wait for MoTD to pass judgement on others.

Would have been a great atmosphere being there. It should have been (and quite easily could have been), but kudos to their keeper. This wasn't a case of Liverpool not taking their chances like all last season, it was Liverpool being denied by great keeping.

Arsenal.. I highly fear, for the first time in my life as an 9 year long Arsenal fan, that they wont finish in the top 4. Europa League feels more realistic for now. Doesn't matter if we sign 2-3 players in the upcoming days, because they are not gonna be world class names

1. Chelsea
2. Man City
3. Man C
4. Tottenham
5. Arsenal
6. Liverpool
7. Everton
8. Swansea
.
.
.
Bottom three goes, Stoke, Hull and Crystal Palace ;)

Re: Premiership 2013/14

Badge image
For Arsenal to turn this around they will need to sign 4 or 5 top quality players. Cabaye from Newcastle is not the kind of signings you'd have in mind. If they landed the players they were targeting all summer, i.e. Higuain, then they'd have a good chance. Arsenal have stated they have money to spend, and a considerable sum of it. Look at City, Spurs and even Southampton, spent absolutely loads. This has to be the season Spurs finish above Arsenal, we've spent over £50m this summer, and we're looking at beating our transfer record for the third time this summer with Willian from Anzhi, that'll take our total to near £90m. It's quite clear we will sell Bale, but, should we keep him, I will be impressed, a vast fortune spent on some good talent and keeping our best player as well and still looking to spend more. If we don't make the champions league this season I'll be gutted, I have full belief in AVB and what he's doing, after all, he got a second chance in the premier league last season after failing at Chelsea, I was scared we'd fall back into oblivion, yet he pulled in the most points in a premier league season for us in our history and we still failed to qualify for the champions league despite finishing 4th the season before and 4th two seasons prior to that.

I think we could possibly be challenging Man United for 3rd this season.

Re: Premiership 2013/14

I heard the term 'War Chest' banded about with regards to Arsenal's transfer fund many times in pre-season.

How you cannot sign a single player for the first XI after such claims is beyond me.

Yep, Pool isn't something special. I don't think Arsenal will sink lower than 5th, and Liverpool are certainly not a top 4 team yet, although they're doing some progress.
