Anthony Carmine was slow to take the kick. During this time U21 Mexico's players had a chance to rest. With a little luck, U21 Mexico's Richard Murillo got control of the ball when Gaspard Rusterholz tried to sneak it across the goal line. Richard Murillo showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Gaspard Rusterholz in the 12th minute of the match. Anthony Carmine might have been able to make a better finish in the 14th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Garnier Rusterholz. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Richard Murillo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hugh Rondinelli in the 24th minute of play. Hugh Rondinelli scored 1-0 in the 24th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Richard Murillo, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. The audience thought a goal was coming when Jonny Eberli got free with Richard Murillo in the 28th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. U21 Mexico's supporters crossed their fingers, but Anthony Carmine was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 41st minute, Umut-Ali Özer hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Mauro Caviezel had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 44th minute.
