After a defensive mix-up in U21 Switzerland's zone, David Villa stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Hieronymus Gilardi came out of the goal and David Villa tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After a rather tough play, U21 Switzerland's Jürgen Rondinelli got a free kick in the 6th minute. U21 Switzerland's Hieronymus Gilardi played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rubén Litago in the 8th minute of play. In the 16th minute, Rubén Litago ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Hieronymus Gilardi was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Hieronymus Gilardi took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rubén Litago, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. U21 Spain were awarded a corner in the 22th minute after U21 Switzerland's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. David Villa took the corner. The referee blew the whistle for a penalty in the 24th minute of the game. One of U21 Switzerland:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of U21 Spain:s goal. 26 minutes into the match, Rubén Litago notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of U21 Switzerland's Hieronymus Gilardi. Hieronymus Gilardi was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Rubén Litago in the 29th minute of play forced U21 Switzerland's goalkeeper Hieronymus Gilardi to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Gustavo Taules stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Jürgen Rondinelli's shot from short distance in the 30th minute. Hieronymus Gilardi was out of position in the 88 minute of play, and Romano Vallejo capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Romano Vallejo really showed his touch with that goal: 1-7. In the 93rd minute Rubén Litago shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hieronymus Gilardi saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After some fancy dribbling in the 97th minute, Rubén Litago managed to get in a good position for a shot. U21 Spain's supporters rose to their feet, but Rubén Litago was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Hieronymus Gilardi breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. U21 Spain's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
