The supporters of U21 Uruguay booed when U21 England was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Stevie Easton didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience was convinced that Raitin Villapol's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Pat Jennings was relentless in the 22nd minute of the game. An unexpectedly hard shot by Austen Farmer in the 30th minute of play forced U21 Uruguay's goalkeeper Gustavo Munúa to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 40th minute of the match, Raitin Villapol got a very nice opportunity to score, but Pat Jennings was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Austen Farmer sent away a hard shot on goal in the 42nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The score stood at 1-1 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

Raitin Villapol might have been able to make a better finish in the 53rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Pat Jennings. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Raitin Villapol ran back to his position shaking his head. Pat Jennings showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Raitin Villapol, who was totally free with the ball in the 57th minute. Raitin Villapol scored 2-1 in the 57th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Pat Jennings, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. A sloppy throw-in by Leigh Beverley in the 61st minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by U21 Uruguay's Miliano Ternero. Gustavo Munúa made a fantastic save in the 65th minute, when Dennis Durkin sent off a good shot on target. In the 67th minute, Dennis Durkin ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Gustavo Munúa was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-2. U21 Uruguay made a substitution. Guido Tijero replaced Ruben Arriano. Dennis Durkin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Gustavo Munúa tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in U21 England's zone, Lucho Aguiar stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Pat Jennings came out of the goal and Lucho Aguiar tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. U21 England's Adrian Pigott was substituted for Hayden Westlake. Gustavo Munúa showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Freddy Hawkins in the 78th minute of the match. When Lucho Aguiar fell near the penalty area in the 79th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Uruguay's protests and gave Lucho Aguiar a yellow card for diving instead. In the 79th match minute, U21 Uruguay was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Lucho Aguiar to maneuver through the defense. In the 81st minute Franky Edgar shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Pat Jennings saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. U21 Uruguay's defense didn't have a chance, in the 89th minute, when Freddy Hawkins scored to the left of an out of position Gustavo Munúa, making the score, 2-3. U21 England played a much better game than U21 Uruguay and deserved their victory. The U21 Uruguay players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
