I don't know a lot about the two players individually but as a team, Real Madrids Copa del Rey holds a mere 28.5714% the prestige of Barcelona's La Liga and UEFA Champions League wins. Football is a team sport. Messi was a key part of another "The Double" Season. He's only 'good' because Barca's got good passers in their squad. That's a fact and no point denying it. If that wasn't true, then why doesn't he perform at the same level with the national team ? Besides, Ronaldo is a more complete player than Messi in a lot of things, including : Free kicks, Vertical leap, Dribbling, Creating chances Ronaldo can also hit the ball equally well with both feet, and he can shoot from any position while Messi has to get close to the penalty area to have any chance of scoring a goal.He's only 'good' because Barca's got good passers in their squad. Besides, Ronaldo is a more complete player than Messi in a lot of things, including :

Free kicks,
Vertical leap,
Dribbling,
Creating chances

Ronaldo can also hit the ball equally well with both feet, and he can shoot from any position while Messi has to get close to the penalty area to have any chance of scoring a goal.

so its a tie at 2-2 @xellu, i do agree with you, messi has xavi and ineista two of the best midfielders in the world today, so he got a plus, but i dont know why he doesn't perform well for his national team. Ronaldo on the other hand took portugal to the 2004 euro final and 2006 world cup final 4. which is big, @kabaddi21 i dont know man. i pretty sure they still be really good players.so its a tie at 2-2

I say Ronaldo because he can carry his team, club or country, on his back. Messi's problem is that he only fits in Barcelona's scheme, which pretty much anyone that's short and skillful can play in. The Spanish set-up is basically a plagiarizes Barcelona's set-up and they've done pretty well by playing Pedro, Silva and Mata in Messi's spot on the left. Ronaldo on the other hand is more of modern player; he's big, skillful, capable of playing on the left, middle or right, he can influence the outcome of a game on his own, scores and sets up his team-mate. Here's an interesting question: How much better would Argentina be if they were to swap Messi for Ronaldo?I say Ronaldo because he can carry his team, club or country, on his back.

did you watch the last two games between Real and Barcelona? Real were the better team and dominated possession. But it was Messi who made the difference. If Messi was playing for Real they would have thrashed Barcelona. He just need a moment or two to beat players to score or assist, Ronaldo on the other had had far more touches but kept losing the ball and struggled against Alves. Ronaldo would not be half as effective as Messi's in Barcelona's set up, he does not have the intelligence of Messi at all. Messi hasn't been that good for Argentina but not as bad as some people make it out to be. He was involved in most of Argentina's goals in the world cup, hit the post a few times and made a few assists. Almost every attack goes through him. Consider the last two games against Venezuela and Nigeria. In the first game he was head and shoulders above everyone else and made the assist for the winning goal. Against Nigeria he made a superb lofted assist that Higuain scored from, for the second goal he won the ball of a opposition player on the halfway line and went past 3 or 4 defenders, the keeper saved the shot through which Di Maria scored. If you watched the last two classico's Messi did things Ronaldo has NEVER done and probably will never do. And as to me re-thinking why people are hard on Messi. Its only in here. Like i said you people are in the minority. Majority of football fans think Messi is superior to Ronaldo. Even a lot of hardcore Ronaldo supporters since his Manchester United days are finally coming around to the fact that Messi is the best player on earth. Go search all english speaking forums, redcafe, redandwhitekop, bluemoon, cfc there are topics where hundreds, possibly thousands have posted. 90 percent of them think Messi is superior. i did watch the game, and i think messi would make a killer attacking midfielder cause he can give great assist and score wonderful goals, Messi and Ronaldo are both legends. Ronaldo is a natural winger who somehow ends up scoring more goals then the strikers. if you put ronaldo with barcelona, i think he would expload and barca would be unstopable, i cant say the same for messi. Ronaldo and Messi are different players. Messi is just pure god given talent. Ronaldo is what happens when one works harder than anyone else in the world. Who is better? In my opinion Ronaldo. Messi gets shut down for Argentina because he doesn't have Xavi and Iniesta there to do 90 percent of the work. Also he isn't protected by refs in International games like he is in the Champions League and La Liga. C.Ronaldo just came to Madrid. He played for Manchester United before. Messi in 8 years with Barcelona has almost 200 goals with them. C.Ronaldo in 2 years with Madrid has over 100 goals already with them. Some Messi fans don't accept the facts that switching teams is hard. You have to get adapetd to a different playing style. They think just because Messi beats CR7 in a game that he is better. @ka1990 Messi is 1.69 metres or 5 feet 7 inches approx. Carlos Tevez, Aaron Lenon, Shaun Wright Philips, Jermaine Defoe, Paul Scholes, Steed Malbranque are all shorter than him. Other players like David Silva, Leighton Baines, Jack Wilshere are of equal height. And dare i say Messi is stronger than all of them bar Tevez. By the way Maradona was just 5 feet 5 inches tall. He would have been the shortest player in the Premier League and one of the shortest in Europe.@ka1990

Yep, and they're not the 1st players that come to mind when 1 thinks of the EPL. They're not incredible like Giggs, Drogba etc.. lol Scholes is a United legend, one of the best midfielders to ever play in the league if not the best. You can say Ronaldo is better, i got no problems with that :) @ka1990 so Messi will never be better than Ronaldo unless he proves himself in the PL? Unfortunately in that case he will never be better than Ronaldo :( Anyway there's no point discussing further since as mentioned in above posts with clear reasoning Ronaldo wins hands down lol. so Messi will never be better than Ronaldo unless he proves himself in the PL? Unfortunately in that case he will never be better than Ronaldo :(

Anyway there's no point discussing further since as mentioned in above posts with clear reasoning Ronaldo wins hands down lol. Lets bump this post in a few season's time or when their career is over. We'll see who looks more silly. Time will tell.

You cant say anyone is better, the only reason why messi doesnt perform well in national team is because opponents are obviously a lot stronger that La Liga teams, and he does not takes as much risk in the NT. Ronaldo scored 40 goals in 34 league matches last season, and that was with Higuain, Benzema or Adebayor playing striker in most games. Messi had 31 goals, but as others have said, no one is better at setting up chances than Barca with Xavi and Iniesta. Ronaldo is an extremely talented player, a fantastic ongoing scoring record, but there's a selfishness and general attitude that count against him. It would be intriguing to see him play *for* Barca, a team genuinely striving to play "the beautiful game". I'll always be a fan of Mourinho but his methodology at Madrid is not as conducive to Ronaldo really getting to play with freedom as Barca's system is for Messi. you are right kingjaime I exaggerated a bit....just by a couple of miles :) (for the record today Messi didn't play most of the game , Barcelona was winning 2-0 , somehow the other team tied ...but Messi couldn't do anything when he got in 65min...(already tied game) not sure why Guardiola didn't started him...)you are right kingjaime I exaggerated a bit....just by a couple of miles :)
