Brazilian Ronaldo as-in the toothy chap? He was immense up until his first knee injury with Internazionale, but although he came back well, from other surgeries too, he never scaled those heights of performance again.
If Brazilians wanted to make a case for one of their own, I'd say Ronaldinho until recently was one of the very greatest of modern times, and Philippe Coutinho one of the most promising.

Ronaldinho was Great, but he got lazy, i think the money and fame got to him. i know deep inside he still got it in him, but Ronaldo El Fenomeno along with zidane will always be my players because i grew up watching them play. They are true LEgends of this game, And so is Messi and Ronaldo.
Messi might tie them this year with three player of the year award each. if real madrid wins la liga , i betting ronaldo gets it

I think Ronaldo could have been the best player ever if not for his injuries. World Player of the Year at just 19 years old. He had everything, physically and technically. People will agree he didn't quite achieve as much as he could because of his career threatening injuries that put him out for 4 years and lost a yard of pace not to mention his weight shot up and still he got to 3 world cup finals winning two, thrice player of the year, joint leading world cup top scorer.
If he didn't have all those problems he would be considered the best ever in my opinion. Yes id put him higher than even Maradona, Pele and Zidane.

I think Messi is better, when the time comes for a player to step up and be counted, when the stakes are high, Messi ALWAYS delivers, for a example, Messi in the semi final to get Barca into the final (this was last season) against Manchester united, Messi dribbled 4-5 players to score a goal AT.... the Bernabau, then he scores the finisher to make it 0-2 later on, where was Ronaldo at that point? playing at home failing to step up to the big stage.
Another example is Messi in the champions league finals, he scored against Manchester united off a HEADER, and last season scored from outside the box, when stakes are high Messi is the player i would rather have, Ronaldo fails at big games. well at least i think so. Also Messi scores against quality opponents and clubs.

Ronaldo fails at big games, you mean against barcelona, where he scored the winning copa del rey . he scored against ac milan, and bunch of other team.

8-7 ronaldo leads
@kabiddi21 ronaldo from brazil was looked at to become better then pele and maradona, but when he got injured, THREE times. that ended it for him. in my point of view, he is the greastest unluckiest player ever

Mourinho has taught Ronaldo to be a team player and if you been watching the real madrid games. you would see that.

the best player to ever walk the earth is messi. he's like jordan in basketball. i can't believe people put that metrosexual model lipstick ronaldo in front of a football god. they don't have the eyes i suppose.
and in tough times for both economy and football we do not compare internationals. and even if we would - both ronaldo and messi do not play well for their countries. the best players in club football do not play well for their nation because they are tired and because of lack of stimulation. just look england and compare it to germany. also check argentine and compare it to uruguay.
the focus of world football is on champions league and that is the first competition in history of football that managed to overtake world cup. imho.

My vote is still for Messi by some distance and will remain that way until CR starts winning trophies again. 40 goals and a domestic cup mean nothing if you fall short in the league and lose in the Champions League Semi-Final.

@kyle-11
Messi two hattricks in 4 days without Xavi and Iniesta!
On Saturday 3 goals in the span of 18 minutes! against Zaragoza
Tuesday 3 goals against Viktoria Pilsen for the Champions League
In none of this games Xavi or Iniesta played...so please give me a break.
202 goals total with Barcelona's jersey

@ river
I don't think I need to mention that he scored hat-tricks against teams that are as good as a bunch of chickens.
Even a 10 year old kid would be able to score 3 goals against the 2 teams mentioned.

Re: Ronaldo Vs Messi

@xeilu
sorry mate that is a ridiculous comment... and against who does Ronaldo score hattricks? Probably the people of the Czech Republic won't like your comment...
Previous Champions Messi scored not 3 but 4 goals against Arsenal ...that is another bunch of chickens .... as well as Stuttgart?
-
Re: Ronaldo Vs Messi
By rivercampion - 02-11-2011 21:37
Honestly such a comment can only be understood from a person that either doesn't follow much of football or understands little about the sport...
Why didn't anyone from Milan scored a hattrick against V. Pilsen?
All time Top Scorers in Champions League (Goals, games, ratio)
1 Raúl 71 144 0.49
2 Ruud van Nistelrooy 56 81 0.69
3 Thierry Henry 50 114 0.44
4 Andriy Shevchenko 48 115 0.41
5 Filippo Inzaghi 46 83 0.55
6 Lionel Messi 42 62 0.69
7 Alessandro Del Piero 42 96 0.43
8 Fernando Morientes 33 93 0.35
9 Didier Drogba 33 62 0.51
10 Cristiano Ronaldo 29 78 0.39
11 David Trezeguet 29 58 0.5
12 Ryan Giggs 29 137 0.21
Just look at who of all these top players has the highest ratio of goals per game.. only two players tying at 0.69 Messi and van Nistelrooy
Ronaldo is way below at 0.39 and in 10th place...with 29 goals vs Messi with 42 and he is just a 24 yrs old!!

Nice interactive feature on this Spanish newspaper (Marca actually a Real Madrid newspaper)
http://www.marca.com/2011/11/02/multimedia/graficos/1320233041.html
in the tab (Goles por Competicion) You can see how he progressed season after season. In bright red = games played, middle red bar = goles scored and light pink (right bar )= number of assists . Noticed how the number of assists has increased dramatically.

You can't compare what is not comparable.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are different players.
Both are legendary players.
However if I must choose... Cristiano Ronaldo.
Why?
For various analyzable reasons:
Because Ronaldo has proven his worth in very different football atmospheres. Messi has not, his is limited to an ambiance that is solely constructed for him, Barcelona's play style.
.
Rationally speaking, Ronaldo having the "working class" talents of Xavi and Iniesta behind him at Barça would be "god like".
Messi in Real Madrid would not... You can't compare Real Madrid's overall team contribution to Ronaldo, with Barça's contribution to Messi (you might perhaps compare it to Manchester United's team collective contribution to Ronaldo... but that would also still be a point in favour for Ronaldo's performance in different ambiances...)
(I might use the same reason in a "Mourinho versus Guardiola" theme...)
Additionally, I would really like to see Messi perform with "anti-Messi" football environments, such as Ronaldo is able to perform with constant "anti-Ronaldos" environments at almost all times...
Others speak of Ronaldo's lack of humbleness...
The lad is not the most modest guy in the world surely not, but that is a long distance in saying he is a "prima dona"... Ronaldo in spite of the fact he's world famous is still the most hard working footballer I remember seeing, he is the last player to leave the training practices at all times. I f that is not a sort of humbleness... Messi is? Well Messi is not harassed by paparazzos as Ronaldo is (Messi doesn't put himself in such scenarios such as Ronaldo, I concur with that tough...)
(if you want good examples of the opposite mention the likes of Ronaldinhos and Romarios that the Brazilians always love to quote...)
Your forgiveness for the quite extensive post...
Cristiano Ronaldo gets my vote.
