If Eliodor Arnăuțescu had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 9th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Sergio Romero showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tiberiu Filip in the 15th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Sporting de Gijón's Wes Lieckens got a free kick in the 15th minute. Sporting de Gijón's Sergio Romero played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Brain Struik in the 16th minute of play. After 21 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Beto Márcico. Eliodor Arnăuțescu struck a weak shot in the 22nd minute. Sergio Romero didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for MCB Timisoara 1921 BTV. Sergio Romero showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tiberiu Filip, who was totally free with the ball in the 33rd minute. Sergio Romero took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Brain Struik, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 35 minutes into the game, Elpidio Bixintxo was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sporting de Gijón's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave MCB Timisoara 1921 BTV the free kick. In the 35th match minute, Sporting de Gijón was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Elpidio Bixintxo to maneuver through the defense. 36 minutes into the match, Brain Struik notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Sporting de Gijón's Sergio Romero. Sergio Romero was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Sporting de Gijón's Marcos-Alberto Rojo was substituted for Melchor Rosio. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Elpidio Bixintxo stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. With his leg Sergio Romero managed to avoid a goal in the 68thth minute, when MCB Timisoara 1921 BTV's Brain Struik fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. In the 72nd match minute, MCB Timisoara 1921 BTV was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Petrică Humă to maneuver through the defense. The supporters of Sporting de Gijón booed when MCB Timisoara 1921 BTV was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 78 match minutes in a wonderful position.
