An unexpectedly hard shot by Alejandro Espina in the 9th minute of play forced Chile's goalkeeper Enrique Enoch to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 12th minute, Firmín Tous hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Enrique Enoch took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ángel Fernández, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 21 minutes into the game, Fortunato Vino threw the ball into play from the sideline. Ecuador's Intriago Herquinigo quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Ricardo Ceberiche was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Marcelo Salas showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 2-0 in the 23 minute of play. Ricardo Ceberiche took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Marcelo Salas, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Chile's Marcelo Salas managed to work through Ecuador's defense and was going for an easy goal, but he hit the shot with his toe and the ball flew outside the goal. Marcelo Salas dejectedly held out his arms as if to ask why the ball hadn't gone in. In the 29thth minute of the game Marcelo Salas who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Ecuador's Ricardo Ceberiche was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 32 minutes into the game, Alejandro Espina cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-1. Enrique Enoch was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Enrique Enoch came out of the goal in the 35th minute to try and stop a shot by Ecuador's Alejandro Espina. But to his dismay, Alejandro Espina quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-2. After 39 minutes of play, Ecuador's Alejandro Espina made it 2-3 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Enrique Enoch was left in no man's land by his defense there! Chile's Enrique Enoch played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alejandro Espina in the 42nd minute of play. In the 45thth minute of the game Marcelo Salas who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Ecuador's Ricardo Ceberiche was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 46 minutes Ecuador's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Firmín Tous who took care of the corner kick. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 2-3 lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Alejandro Espina made a kick off. In the 53rdth minute of the game Alejandro Espina who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Chile's Enrique Enoch was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. If Alejandro Espina had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 62nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Enrique Enoch made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alejandro Espina in the 62nd minute of play. Ecuador made a substitution. Washington Piedrahita replaced Lorenzo Acutain. Chile's Alfonso Goicoechea was substituted for Marcelo Salas. Chile's Rafael Maria Píriz was substituted for Peter Talvik. Fortunato Vino made in the 67th minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Firmín Tous. Fortunato Vino kicked well hit freekick during the 70th minute of the match. Flavio Cifuentes's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Enrique Enoch read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 72nd minute of play. Enrique Enoch made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Flavio Cifuentes in the 76th minute of play. Flavio Cifuentes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 79th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Flavio Cifuentess short, quick shot in the 80thth minute got Enrique Enoch to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Enrique Enoch made a fantastic save in the 84th minute, when Flavio Cifuentes sent off a good shot on target. In the 89th match minute, Ecuador was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Cordero Aberasturi to maneuver through the defense. Chile's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Firmín Tous in the 92nd minute. A nice corner shot did that Firmín Tous got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Ricardo Ceberiche quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Ecuador had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
