Sven Van Ghele showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Qiao Qi Bo in the 9th minute of the match. With an all-out effort, Club Atlético Lanús's Hoyt Cormier threw himself towards the right post 12 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Sidney Cavazos, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. 13 minutes into the game, Jerry Brunault was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Fenerbahçe S.K.'s manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Club Atlético Lanús the free kick. The supporters of Club Atlético Lanús booed when Fenerbahçe S.K. was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jerry Brunault didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 24 played minutes Club Atlético Lanús got a freekick which was hit by Diego Simeone. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Gilberto Fremont in the 25th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Sven Van Ghele prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 26th minute Lothaire Maddox shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Hoyt Cormier saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sidney Cavazos received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 28th minute. Hoyt Cormier tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Sven Van Ghele showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Xiao Yun Jun in the 30th minute of the match. After a rather tough play, Club Atlético Lanús's Édouard Bacon got a free kick in the 30th minute. Club Atlético Lanús's Sven Van Ghele played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Qiao Qi Bo in the 33rd minute of play. After 36 played minutes Fenerbahçe S.K. got a freekick which was hit by Charlie Blevins. Sven Van Ghele showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Qiao Qi Bo, who was totally free with the ball in the 39th minute. Hoyt Cormier made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lothaire Maddox in the 40th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lothaire Maddox in the 43rd minute of play forced Fenerbahçe S.K.'s goalkeeper Hoyt Cormier to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 47th minute Gilberto Fremont shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sven Van Ghele saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The first half was very even, with the score at 1-1 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Lothaire Maddox was the one to do the kick off. Lothaire Maddox recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 59th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Hoyt Cormier came out of the goal in the 65th minute to try and stop a shot by Club Atlético Lanús's Sidney Cavazos. But to his dismay, Sidney Cavazos quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. Hoyt Cormier made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Lothaire Maddox in the 69th minute of play. When Qiao Qi Bo came up free with the goalie in the 72nd minute, the Fenerbahçe S.K. fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Qiao Qi Bo couldn't finish the play. Fenerbahçe S.K.'s Hoyt Cormier played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sidney Cavazos in the 82nd minute of play. Gilberto Fremont could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 83rd minute of the match, but Sven Van Ghele made a huge save. When Cruz Lentz fell near the penalty area in the 85th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Fenerbahçe S.K.'s protests and gave Cruz Lentz a yellow card for diving instead. In the 86th minute, Cruz Lentz hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 88thth minute of the game Lothaire Maddox who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Fenerbahçe S.K.'s Hoyt Cormier was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. In the 90th minute, Sidney Cavazos got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. For all the effort they put into the match, the Fenerbahçe S.K. players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for Club Atlético Lanús.
