After a defensive mix-up in Colombia's zone, Yaniusky Pardo stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Rene Higuita came out of the goal and Yaniusky Pardo tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Rene Higuita showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cordario Vivero, who was totally free with the ball in the 19th minute. After having played for 24 minutes, Don Gato managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Colombia's supporters crossed their fingers, but Don Gato was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 26 minutes into the match, Agustín Álvarez notched a goal, 0-3, to the right of Colombia's Rene Higuita. Rene Higuita was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Jeraldo Peñaranda got a throw-in 32 minutes in the game and the ball was received by Agustín Álvarez. Rene Higuita made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Agustín Álvarez in the 33rd minute of play. Xove Tijerina showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Don Gato, who was totally free with the ball in the 35th minute. In the 38th match minute, Colombia was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Alberto Camudio to maneuver through the defense. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-3.

Rene Higuita showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Agustín Álvarez in the 53rd minute of the match. 58 minutes into the game, Colombia's Don Gato nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Xove Tijerina made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-3. Uruguay made a substitution. Berenguer Anda replaced Yaniusky Pardo. Don Gato recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 68th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Colombia made a substitution. Ordono Balda replaced Don Gato. Uruguay's Celso Maestre was substituted for Primitivo Grau. Colombia made a substitution. Alexander Del Piero replaced Zaquiel Puredo. Uruguay's Xove Tijerina played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ordono Balda in the 74th minute of play. Rosario Cepa sent away a hard shot on goal in the 75th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. If Rosario Cepa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 77th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Rene Higuita made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Rosario Cepa in the 79th minute of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Rosario Cepa in the 79th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Rene Higuita prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Colombia's Rene Higuita played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rosario Cepa in the 80th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Alexander Del Piero in the 82nd minute of play forced Uruguay's goalkeeper Xove Tijerina to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Ordono Balda might have been able to make a better finish in the 83rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Xove Tijerina. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Ordono Balda ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 87thth minute of the game Ordono Balda who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Uruguay's Xove Tijerina was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 91 minutes into the match, Uruguay's goal looked a bit too open when Alexander Del Piero came free, but Xove Tijerina reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A throw-in in the 93rd minute of the game was made by Ivon Trullols with Ordono Balda as target, who quickly passed the ball forward. Xove Tijerina showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Esteban Đido, who was totally free with the ball in the 94th minute. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. Uruguay walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
