Teo De Jonge made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. Ewout Loremans could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 17th minute of the match, but Eddy Luirink made a huge save. Marco Assendelft took the ball and in the 18 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Teo De Jonge. Teo De Jonge dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-2. With a little luck, U21 Netherlands's Eddy Luirink got control of the ball when Joonatan Netels tried to sneak it across the goal line. Timmy Van Campenhout hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. 24 minutes into the match, U21 Netherlands's Erben Spiljard broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. U21 Netherlands's Eddy Luirink played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ewout Loremans in the 26th minute of play. Ewout Loremans could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 31st minute of the match, but Eddy Luirink made a huge save. Eddy Luirink came out of the goal in the 33rd minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Belgium's Joonatan Netels. But to his dismay, Joonatan Netels quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-2. 35 minutes into the match, U21 Netherlands's goalkeeper Eddy Luirink had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Joonatan Netels. In the 38th minute, Pascal Zegeling hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 40th minute Wouter Vandevyver shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Eddy Luirink saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Marco Assendelft was the one to do the kick off.
