Re: England 1-0 Spain

I thought we were VERY lucky yesterday. I still think we are STILL years behind Spain and we need work to beat Spain next year if we play them. Capello needs to pick his team wisely and bring some players in the Euros that can try and do our best but I still think we will get to the Quarters and fail against the Germans (sad I know but we all know it though)

Regardless of difference between teams, England kept a clean sheet and scored the only goal. That's the point isn't it? Well done to England!
If this had been an Mz result there'd be a whole string of posts comparing possession and sc stats and claiming how unrealistic the sim is!

I think we need to improve alot even though this was a friendly. Had this been in the World Cup it would hardly be a shock when Spain have been amazing in the World Cup with the usual suspects Xavi, Iniesta ect.

I do believe England was lucky, but hey, a win over the world champions is something, no matter what, right ?

the team selection and formation was not how you would have thought, it was like a defensive minded italian job,
but we were well short of chances and were lucky to get the free kick prior to the goal,
at the other end they could have had two but it never went for them..
we seem to have many more options now suddenly than a few years ago, and the old lampard/ gerrard saga is now over with milner/barry and parker , milner is very versatile and we also have the bonus of lampard and gerrard too, i also think that rooney should have to fight like hell to get his place back.
i suppose we have to look at it in a positive frame , we already know that anything can happen on the day..

Confirmed Scott Parker is fantastic for England as well as his club
Confirmed Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka can be much more than cover for John Terry and Rio Ferdinand
Two nice outcomes on top of a win, no matter what Cesc Fabregas says.

Now England just have to beat Sweden tomorrow :D
Because you havn't won against us since 1968(no offence=), but you probably will do it tomorrow, Sweden looked very weak against Denmark when they played some days before..

Hey i'm not even nterested in the international aspect of football but we beat spain by producing a brilliant defensive performance.... Everton did it years ago and finished 4th and 5th twice, Arsenal used to do it for years and won the league, Greece did it a few years ago and won the euro championships.
It doesn't matter how many chance you create or not as long as you defend like England did and put away the chance that you will always get then anything is possible.

I think @auberginemorris assessed the game well. What did everyone expect to happen - England play Spain off the park? Never going to happen.
I'm usually critical of Capello but he got it right, we looked organised and I was pleased to see the team playing for each other more than in previous internationals. If we want success with the current side, expect to see more of the same against more technically gifted sides. Its a patience game and we do have some good counter attacking players to justify setting up like that.
Long term you have to look at the current German model as the best option for us to try and emulate. We do not have the infrastructure to be Spain. Germany have been smart - effectively writing themselves off for 5 years while they brought a team through from the same new generation. If England want to win on the world stage that is our best bet - blooding the likes of Mceachran, Wilshere, Jones, Sturridge, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rodwell after the next tournament and effectively promoting a talented under 21 side.
Unfortunately the pressure on the England set-up is probably to high to allow this but its a very good way of approaching things.
Back on topic... We deserved to beat Spain because we scored and they didn't. More importantly Capello will have actually learnt a few things from the friendlies - notably that Bent is capable in Rooney's absence. Shame that Micah didn't get given a look in but I suppose you can't do it all.
