Premiership Relegation

++SPOILERS++
(Information below includes the results of today's relevant matches, if you don't want to know the scores, look away now...)

So as the Premier League 2010/11 season draws to a close, with two rounds of (relevant) fixtures remaining, 7 teams are still mathematically in the relegation mix... Aston Villa, Blackburn, Wolves, Birmingham, Blackpool, Wigan and West Ham.

The bottom of the table, for those 7, looks like this after today's matches...

Pos......Team..........Played....Goals...Pts
==============================
14th.....Aston Villa.........36......-13.....42
15th.....Blackburn..........37.....-14......40
16th.....Wolves..............37......-19......40
17th.....Birmingham.....36......-18......39
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
18th.....Blackpool..........37......-21.....39
19th.....Wigan................36......-23......36
20th.....West Ham.........36.....-23......33
Remaining relevant fixtures...
# Sunday 15th of May #
Arsenal v Aston Villa
Birmingham v Fulham
Wigan v West Ham
# Sunday 22nd of May #
Aston Villa v Liverpool
Man Utd v Blackpool
Stoke v Wigan
Tottenham v Birmingham
West Ham v Sunderland
Wolverhampton v Blackburn
# Last 5 matches (most recent first) #
Aston Villa........DLDWW
Blackburn.........DDWLL
Wolves..............WWDLD
Birmingham....LDLLW
Blackpool.........WDDDL
Wigan...............DDLWL
West Ham........DLLLL (last win was 8 matches back)
SAFEST = Aston Villa
It would need an extraordinary series of results for Villa to drop into the bottom three. They would have to lose their last 2 matches, Wolves v Blackburn would have end in a win for either of them (i.e. not be a draw), Birmingham would have to win at least one of their last 2 matches, with a large goal difference swing, or take at least 4 points from the 6 (for goal difference not to matter), Blackpool win their last match with a significant goal difference swing, and Wigan win last 2 matches, again with a significant goal difference swing.
MOST DANGER = West Ham
They need to win their last 2 matches and see either Blackpool lose their last match or Birmingham lose both their last 2 matches, along with a distinct goal difference swing in their favour.
SO...
What are your thoughts?
(1) Who do you think will go down?
(2) Who would you most like to see go down or, if you're of a nicer disposition, just who would you most like to see stay up?
(3) Score predictions (for the above fixtures)?
1. West Ham, Wigan, Birmingham
2. Want to see Wolves and Blackpool stay up. Im sure most people want to see Holloway and his boys stay up. Rarely do you see a promoted team make such an impact, they have been truly commendable in their approach to the premier league, and a hilarious manager to boot.
As for Wolves, I just like honest Mick. Has always been a yo-yo manager between the PL and the championship, but i think he's about to mature into a more consistently good manager, and Wolves have toppled all of the big teams at least once this season which deserves credit.
3 (not related to my relegation predictions)
.# Sunday 15th of May #
Arsenal v Aston Villa : 1-1
Birmingham v Fulham: 1-2
Wigan v West Ham : 0-0
# Sunday 22nd of May #
Aston Villa v Liverpool: 0-4
Man Utd v Blackpool: 2-3
Stoke v Wigan: 1-1
Tottenham v Birmingham: 1-0
West Ham v Sunderland: 1-3
Wolverhampton v Blackburn: 2-0
How much is it out of your wallet if i get these all correct KJ?
Re: Premiership Relegation
Anyone who gets everything correct, every scoreline and final position, I'll send them 1 power token :)
Re: Premiership Relegation
Nicely wrapped it up KJ! I also hope that Wolves and Blackpool will make it, both are very good teams. I'd go for West Ham, Wigan and Birmingham being relegated.
Besides all these I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game between Liverpool and Spurs as well, will be a great match for sure in the race for 5th.
Re: Premiership Relegation
Shame about West Ham, almost certain for the drop. Good club with a lot of history. Pretty impartial between wolves and birmingham, have a few friends that are wolves fans so i guess i could mock for a few weeks if they got relegated. Mcarthy does liven up match of the day though
Does it make me a bad person wanting blackpool to go down :/ everyone seems to want them to stay up lol. Frankly any club that cant get over twenty thousand fans for a home game, should they be in the PL? Tinpot club in my eyes, same goes for wigan as well. Id be happy for Holloway if they stay up though, hes done a good job their.
:( ....gutted. Cant keep throwin away 2 goal leads and expect to stay up. A match that summarises our season - cruddy defendin and a patchy line up. There was that glimmer of hope at half time with the other scores etc, only to flop themselves... Will be tough to shoot back up, especially with the inevitable player departures. argh. Hopefully Avram gets his marchin orders... I prefer my managers with some enthusiasm, passion and character.
Re: Premiership Relegation
Grants gone, got sacked almost immediately after the match. Got the sack while still at the DW stadium apparently
Re: Premiership Relegation
Badge image
Sorry to see West Ham go. Not even faintly sorry to see Grant go, hopefully the last we see of him in the Premiership (either as manager or director of football). However many seasons he's been there in total is exactly equal to how many he shouldn't have been. It's tough, but 1 win in the first 14, they've been in trouble all season, stuck with Avram "he's such a nice and dignified man though" Grant, bottom at Christmas, then right when it really counts at the end of the season, they put on a run of drawn 1 and lost 6 to mathematically confirm relegation. Sam Allardyce in? Maybe not in the Championship. Similar reason probably not McLaren. Alan Curbishley...?
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
~~ Predictions for the 15th of May ~~
What experts we all are! :-D
Three matches, even just results (W/D/L), no-one got more than 1 out of 3!
No-one got a single scoreline right!
I hope none of us backed our predicting instincts with any cash bets...
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
~~ Where things stand now ~~
SAFE = Aston Villa have put themselves mathematically safe from relegation after their extraordinary win at Arsenal.
GONE = West Ham are relegated after their extraordinary sacrifice of a 2-goal lead against Wigan ultimately led to a 3-2 defeat.
SO...
Pos......Team..........Played....Goals...Pts
==============================
15th.....Blackburn..........37.....-14......40
16th.....Wolves..............37......-19......40
17th.....Birmingham.....37......-20......39
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
18th.....Blackpool..........37......-21.....39
19th.....Wigan................37......-22......39
20th.....West Ham.........37.....-24......33 (Relegated)

# Last round of fixtures, Sunday 22nd of May #
Man Utd v Blackpool
Stoke v Wigan
Tottenham v Birmingham
Wolverhampton v Blackburn

Blackburn and Wolves are the only teams entirely with destiny in their own hands. If their match is not a draw, whoever wins it also secures safety. If it is a draw, they could both go down. Wolves would go if any 2 of Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan win, Blackburn would join them if all 3 of those win.

The other three are all relying on other results going at least somewhat in their favour. Birmingham are in a deceptively precarious position, they could go down even if they win their last match, if Blackpool or Wigan win by a larger margin and thus overhaul the small goal difference. For Blackpool a draw would be enough if Wigan draw or lose and Birmingham lose. For Wigan a draw would be enough if Blackpool and Birmingham both lose.

It's quite an intriguing situation really. Any of those 5 who win will likely be safe.

I'm gonna say...
Man Utd 2 - 2 Blackpool
Stoke 0 - 1 Wigan
Tottenham 3 - 1 Birmingham
Wolverhampton 1 - 1 Blackburn

Which would mean Blackpool and Birmingham joining the Hammers in the Championship next season.

I'd rather Blackpool stay up, and I'd like to see Wolves stay (which I think they will). If I had my choice, I'd send Wigan and Blackburn down >;)

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
at a glance i thought maybe the standings could stay as they are, but we could see one of the teams above the bottom three relegated on goal difference, i personally would like to see wigan stay up as they have one or two match winners in the team, but lets not overlook something farcical happening, like blackpool winning at man utd..all bets are off..

My predictions .. (fancy my chances at these things btw) ..unless I actually bet them, in which case theyre insta-void... So :-

Man Utd 2-1 Blackpool
Stoke 2-2 Wigan
Tottenham 1-1 Birmingham
Wolves 1-0 Blackburn

Meaning.... No changes.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
Birmingham and Blackpool for me are for the drop although its really close to call looking at the table. I fancy Wigan to get something at stoke. Wolves on current form should see off Blackburn. Cant see Birmingham or Blackpool getting anything out of their last fixtures
I'd agree with Paul Merson in what he said last night that i'd rather be the teams out of the bottom three rather than the the ones in the relegation zone.

You never know though with so much to play for results could be anything at the weekend

Re: Premiership Relegation

Man Utd 4-0 Blackpool
Stoke 2-2 Wigan
Tottenham 3-0 Birmingham
Wolves 0-0 Blackburn

Avram Grant - Millwall Legend.

Sad but true. Wish the board had the balls to sack him earlier.

We're going down for a while. We might be some time...

Heard Steve McClaren is bookies favourite for the appointment... I'd be happy with that tbh, he's got the papers to get us back on top.

Only trouble with that tonner is that he's a complete twat.
He did nothing at Boro that any other jobing manager with loaded chairman could have done.
He had a shocker with England, hanging on to Svenis tactics and squad selections.
He did alright in Holland, and then got sacked in Gemany. I'd rather have the Rodent back tbh.
They have to pull out the stops for O'Neill.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
i can see Chris Hughton getting the job tbh, cant see O'Neil going to the championship and to a club masively in debt, he wouldnt have his usual funds to sign players.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
With minimal offence to die-hard Hammers, I'd be disappointed in Martin O'Neill, he'd be selling himself woefully short. I think McLaren might think himself the same. I'm no fan of his but it is selling him a bit short to say he did "alright" in Holland. Winning the title there while not in charge of Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord was a pretty impressive achievement I'd say.

Chris Hughton seems a pretty fair call. I suppose similarly Roberto Di Matteo might be, another guy who proven success in the Championship, I think generally thought to be a bit unlucky to lose his job, West Ham being a London club would probably suit... I honestly don't think Curbishley would be a bad outside-bet, or indeed a bad appointment. I don't think there's too much residual bad feeling towards him, over the payout or something, is there...?

Re: Premiership Relegation

i heard on five live today that sullivan wants to appoint a british manager and that there could be news within days..

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
Chris Hughton, used to working for sleazy fat men, Londoner, knows the club and has won the Championship. Should be able to reshape the side with players capable at that level and develop youth.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
I can't believe West Ham is relegating!!! And which are the 3 teams getting promoted so far?

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
I see Blackpool staying up, Utd being fined and sued by the relegated teams for playing a weakened team again then losing champs league final (again)

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
@atlanta, the two teams so far promoted to the premiership are,Queens Park Rangers,promoted as champions, Norwich City, promoted as second placed,the third team will be decided by a play off between, Swansea City V Reading FC..

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
I really wanted it to be Forest or Cardiff promoted. Woe.

Re: Premiership Relegation

QPR is back!!! Thats good news. Now, go Swansea!!! Will be good to have a welsh team in the Premiership, unfortunately last year Cardiff lost its chance against Blackpool.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
Oh hey, look at this... 15th of May predictions by kingjaime included...
Stoke 0 - 1 Wigan

And...
"Blackpool and Birmingham joining the Hammers in the Championship next season."

That was all 100% bang-on, but further uncanny predictive ability on closer examination of other comments that day...

Man Utd 2 - 2 Blackpool
Tottenham 3 - 1 Birmingham
Wolverhampton 1 - 1 Blackburn

So look, I predicted Blackpool not to win at Man Utd! Correct!
I predicted Tottenham to win and the 3 meant like the 3rd minute of injury time for the winner! Astonishing!
And finally, I predicted Wolves not to win at home to Blackburn! Wow!

Amazing stuff.

Not all that sorry to see Birmingham go, but shame about Blackpool.

Re: Premiership Relegation

Badge image
I also predicted Birmingham and Blackpool to go down. Although i didn't see Blackburn getting a result but fair play. Wigan played a tired Stoke side, i didn't think Birmingham would get anything this weekend and they didn't.
Epic last day of the season enjoyed watching it unfold. Hopefully same again next season :)

Re: Premiership Relegation

@atlanta... this Swansea side will be the first Welsh team ever to play in the top English league. I suppose it's a little bit of history but it doesn't feel all that significant, considering they, Cardiff and Wrexham have been playing in the English league and cup competitions for so long. And there have been many, many Welsh players and managers in the top division before (and currently).
