Spain Trip

Badge image
I'm thinking about planning a 11 day Spain trip in early April. Because of flights, I'll have 9 full days in Spain. My plan was to split the time between Barcelona & Valencia.

Does anybody have any opinions on absolute must sees, or other locations I should be considering as opposed to Valencia & Barcelona. The Madrid derby is happening during the time frame that I'm there so there is a real incentive to go the Madrid, but I like the idea of the coastal cities (even if the weather is quite HOT yet). Guess I'll just have to settle for touring the Nou Camp (unless Champions League lines up) and going to see Valencia vs Espanyol.

Opinions would be very helpful. Although I eventually will plan the hell out of this trip, I'm currently still in the early stages and still haven't ruled out a Caribbean trip instead.

There's a little city in the western coast called Portugal, it's a might-as-well-go-see place. When you get there could you pass a message to Cristiano Ronaldo? Can you tell him that he smells nice.

I am familiar with Portugal. I intend to change planes there. That should be good enough.

Actually I have a friend at work who tried all last night to get me to go to Lison as opposed to Barcelona.

more accurately she was trying to get me to do a Lisbon / Seville trip (since that's the trip she did 10 years ago) as opposed to Barcelona / Valencia. I did like the idea of being in Southern Spain but I kind of feel like I have to see EITHER Madrid or Barcelona when I go.

Avoid places with Australians, they don't take kindly to Canadians :)

Spain in early April normally touches 25-30c as the Madrid Half Marathon which i'm looking at doing if I don't do the London Marathon on 22nd April is roasting (yes, i'm British)

Lisbon in Portugal is a wonderful water based city with wonderful sights and friendly people but it depends what you want to get out of your trip. Although wikitravel provides insights, Barcelona is a wonderful foodie city as well as a laid back feel, whereas Madrid is buzzing with activity.

Avoid Benidorm as it's full of sunburnt moaning Brits. ;)

this is pretty much the rule I live my life by.

really? that hot? I would have thought more like 15-20 in early April. the hotter the better (to a certain extent) as getting a beach day or two would be a welcome surprise. especially since the alternative to running around some major cities doing touristy things is sitting on a beach in Cuba doing absolutely nothing at all.

Next question...

If I have 9 full days to split between the two cities should I do:

a) Barcelona for 5 days and Valencia for 4 days
b) Valencia for 5 days and Barcelona for 4 days

Go to Barcelona and vote for Catalonia to separate from Spain. They're having a referendum soon.

As a native Swede, I recently moved to Marbella, which is very close to Malaga on the southern coast (was relocated due to work). What I like about it is the fact that it's on the coast and have the best beaches in Europe (from my point of view) and there is a fantastic mix of very classy style combined with older parts of the city. You get the best of two worlds

Also, you can catch La Liga matches to watch Malaga CF at the Rosaleda Stadium. I arrived in April myself, and saw the game versus Atletico Madrid. If you rather see quality football, Sevilla is only 2 hours away from here (Marbella)

I would suggest you making a combination like 2-3 days in each place: Barcelona -> Valencia -> Malaga/Marbella, or skip Marbella and go straight to Sevilla from Malaga.

Spain is nice and I really like the country, especially down here on the coast. Let me know if you have any questions about any place, glady help even though I am a recent expat myself :)

Is Lisbon/Seville/Malaga a better trip than Barcelona/Valencia?

Or would you recommend going north from Barcelona into Southern France? Does anybody know anything about Llafranc as a 3 day stop (and yes I know Llafranc is still in Spain) and or Montpellier/Marseille? Thinking Nice might be a little too far.

It's a 10 year anniversary trip so I want something nice/romantic/relaxing, but I'm also only in Europe once a decade so I still want to see "the sights".

Whatever you do, just don't fly between Madrid and Barcelona! Both cities do not like each other, politically as well as in football, mainly because Madrid is the capital of Spain, and Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a region in Spain that is trying to gain independence from the rest of the country.

My father had to fly between the two during a business trip, he works as a network technician. Most of the passengers' luggage was not loaded onto the aircraft, he had to start work nearly a week late until it arrived later on!

If you, in the end, plan the trip to Barcelona, you have to see Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, Las Ramblas, Casa Milà, Montjuic and Picasso Museum.

Although I'm pretty sure someone from Barcelona or close could help you more, those are the most popular things to see. If you fly to Madrid, hit me up and I'll gladly help you.

the trip is now booked. I'm 6 days in Barcelona and 7 days in Nice (although I plan to use some of those 7 days to do day trips to Monaco, Italy, Enze, etc.)

thanks for the heads up on things to do in Barcelona. Many of them I have come across and intend to do. There are however a couple that I have not yet heard of and will have to look in to.

Come to Australia instead.

You arrive at Sydney airport at 9am, you and I will get drunk by 10am. You'll be back home before the day ends.

good trip I'd say

I can give you info only about the south coast, from Malaga to Gibraltar.
I like landscapes and to be honest, i run away from big cities, yet, Barcelona is a beauty i've heard.
