GTA V (Five)

I just watched the gameplay trailer of this masterpiece of a game and I remember when the very first GTA came out it was really rubbish compared to this new one obviously. I think I will get it for my birthday (19th September). Here is the trailer I was telling you about:

I have my copy pre ordered, girlfriend has been warned, kids go away 2 days after release. I think im set for a small hibernation period. :)

Was just reading yesterday that the map area is bigger than GTA IV, Red dead Redemption and GTA-San Andreas combined!!!! I have always loved the freedom given to you in the GTA games right from the very start, and this edition should be stunning.

The only bummer i have is its release 2 months before the PS$, which means I will have to buy 2 copies of it. Also the fact its released a week before FIFA 14, as i really dont get to spend that much time playing anything when life is in full swing so to have 2 awesome games in such a short space of time means something will go on hold.

Re: GTA V (Five)

This is the reason why I will fail uni.

I fear for my relationship with GTA5 and NBA2k14 coming out in the next month.

My girlfriend might beat me to death with an Xbox 360 controller.

Re: GTA V (Five)

The first GTA was awesome. You can't really compare it to the 3D games, so different. And I'll say this for it: it was better than GTA London 1969 and a hell of a lot better than GTA2. GTA3 was a quantum-leap. GTA Vice City was and remains the best setting and atmosphere, GTA San Andreas the best gameplay and stupendous map size and quality. In many ways my dream game remains an HD version of Vice City, with expanded map and San Andreas gameplay mechanism. Vice City skin, San Andreas engine, you could say.

I was hugely underwhelmed by GTA IV, bought the pack with all DLC for 360 and I've tried a couple of times but couldn't get into it. Saints Row 3 was more enjoyable. In fact, even sticking to GTA games, I enjoyed Chinatown Wars on the DS way more than IV.

In fact, while I am looking forward to V, and will order it for delivery as soon as possible, I'm not as much as I was looking forward to San Andreas after Vice City, or as much as I would be if this was a Red Dead Redemption sequel of some sort. My concern is how similar it's mechanics are to IV, particularly the driving... We shall see.

Sincerely,
Mr Pessimist

What is this 'GTA' you speak of?

Re: GTA V (Five)

In fact, continuing loyalty to that phrase, I gave GTA IV another go just now, and god... No doubt the physics and general game were debated at the time, but really... It just, it isn't fun. So many of the little touches from San Andreas have gone, from weaponry to things like riding a BMX, riding a car bonnet or flatbed truck firing a chain-gun at whoever you take a dislike to on your travels... And the driving, oh my word. On forums I see people talking about skill and admirable realism but jesus h corbett, it's not fun! I hear GTA V is going for less realism and I really, really hope that's true. If it plays too much like IV, I'll send it back. And it'll motivate me to sell GTA IV, if it's worth anything anymore, god knows why I've kept it because it's dreadful.

Well i got my copy this morning (not quite enthusiastic enough to go for the midnight release), raced home apart from the last 20 minutes or so where i was being followed by a policeman as some sort of temptation test. Get in the house, open the box, like a shining light glowing from it i started transfixed and the wonders within, the hat, the key, the lock bag. Cant take it any more, lets get playing. insert disc, inevitable "you need to update you operating system" line from the PS3, so begin waiting patiently for the update to complete.

*the phone rings*

Ordinarily i would have just ignored it, but seeing as i had nothing better to do i answered it....

Then.... Then and only then did i realize what the next 24 hours was on a global scale.
It was the gf. "Ive just sold my lounge, can you pop over with your van and deliver it for me please" *oh shit* question - was this the last conversation i ever wanted to have with this woman? question 2 - is the first thing i want to do every morning when i wake up is check if my genitalia are attached to me or the nailed to the wall?

Thats right lads, we are now entering the BTZ (Boyfriend Testing Zone) which is a desolate place a lot like purgatory, but filled with haunting screams of "Its only a fucking game" and "so you like a fucking game more than you like me".
It is practically guaranteed your gf will have some menial task for you to perform that removes you from GTA V for some period of time, and god help those who fail this trial by fire, soft furnishings and heavy lifting.

I can say both ashamedly and proudly that I passed my test and have been rewarded with the GTA V guide in hardcover as well as in other ways *nudge nudge wink wink*, and now as i sit here with the loading screen on the tv and the phone unplugged, 3 hours later than planned, i begin my adventure.

So long friends, i hope the majority of you survive....

Re: GTA V (Five)

Only 3 hours waiting grinner? That's loading and delivering plus the nudge nudge wink wink part. So, either you loaded the van, drove to the next house on the street and unloaded it, or your nudge nudge wink wink part was as quick as a nudge and a wink ;)

I haven't got it yet, had the temptation to buy it from ASDA yesterday (There was a stockpile at Barrow-in-Furness's Asda yesterday) but decided against it. I shall wait for the PS4 before I get it, and even then that Watch Dogs looks absolutely immense, and Battlefield 4 of course. Such a good year this year, getting my apprenticeship, becoming single, PS4, Fifa 14, COD: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, GTA V and Watchdogs. 2013, I love it! May 2014 be an Apple sponsored year and be the 2013S!

Yeah, pretty embarrassing in a 6 day period, but the joys of a single man :) ...As I woke this morning, fresh from insomnia and cured of the GTA spell, I noticed my phone alight in the corner, presumably where it'd been tossed - 18 missed calls, 5 texts and a voicemail from a drunken mate lookin for a lift into town.. hope he made it ok. Clutter everywhere, not unlike the morning after in a hangover movie, the beer tins replaced with red bull ones. As I clambered downstair, to my shock, the Chinese delivery guy's corpse lay decaying just inside the storm door, think I ordered that Tuesday, why he never left, I just dunno, must have seen the light on...

Ah well, back to reality now, things are still hazy, and the come down is well underway. Might nip on for a few Taxi missions tonight after work, you know, just a taster, can't just go cold turkey like that.. just a few, yeah.. yeah... like one.. or... maybe a couple.. see how things go.. a few even, yeah.... yeah :)

I've heard of people blitzing through it, but personally I'm just loving cruising about causing trouble, any side missions, races, exploring... only downloaded the iFruit app today so just about to get into training Chop and customizing car/plate... Haven't done any swimming yet... I'm in a state of prolonged joy, especially considering how much I disliked GTA IV.

The only ting so far I'm a little unhappy about is no Vigilante mission and not sure if Ambulance missions. I hear Mel Gibson's Bounty Hunter missions will serve as basically similar to Vigilante though, so look forward to them...

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
Yeah im with you here KJ, cruise on through doing a bit of whatever takes the fancy. Got a fair few missions under the belt, collected the scrap pieces of paper, caused many and much havoc at the airport many times, few races and side missions. That way when im in the mood to hammer a few missions, they are there for me to do, and if i ever get to the point where i NEED to know how it all ends, ill just do that until its done.

Not taking anything away from your effort tonner, quite impressed with your focus, although it does go some way to explain why i never got my sweet and sour pork delivered the other night...

I lost internet for 12 days, GTA V tidily kept me going much to my girlfriends displeasure.

I spent 45 minutes playing golf earlier today, not entirely sure how that happened.

Now on a "Pimp My Ride" spree to get lovely shiny cars since I lost 3 cars doing silly side missions and getting killed.

I've also spent too much time in Suburbian and Ponsonbys making Franklin look "swag".

Just to warn people, on Tuesday when GTA Online goes up - there's 500-700 missions.

Eddie.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
I'm still loving it, and drawing it out, minimal effort to do story missions... but for me reasons are mounting in favour of the view that it's inferior to San Andreas.

Here's a few off the top of my head:
(1) No vigilante missions. No fire truck missions. No paramedic missions. No haulage missions
Strange. You can fire the hose on a fire truck, but they didn't bother to give you a few cars to get to and extinguish in return for say some protection from fire (classic reward). There are ambulances, but they didn't bother to put in a few random injured people, use the countdown timer... not complicated. Haulage even simpler. Vigilante replaced by Trevor's Bounty Hunter, a bit, I suppose.

(2) I miss the eating and exercising
Bit of a chore sometimes but I liked it, was cool to see CJ get visibly ripped, and funny say if you made him fat and the resultant effect on running.

(3) Clothing and hairstyle options
So for Franklin I can give him a cap worn in that gimmy off-centre way, but no option for a straight fit, nor backwards, and no bandana. Just caps for Trevor, where's the bucket hats and stetsons and stuff. Where's cooler sunglasses... Where's some real variety to hair style and perhaps colour? Ugh, I don't even really want to do much "dressing up the characters" but you could make CJ look pretty varied and cool in SA, much more so than any of the guys in this.

(4) Map variety
So the size might be huge, but you're basically talking city and backwoods. In SA you had city, backwoods AND casino-land. I'd way rather be gambling in a casino (a RDR-style poker option, surely) than the stockmarket, but why not both...

(5) Getting shot and killed in vehicles
Realistic and all, but I loved that you could crawl into a car basically dead on SA and get away, on this you just get slaughtered anyway.

(6) Invincibility cheat
Haven't even used it yet, but once I beat SA it was fun here and there to be invincible and cause havoc. In V you get a 5-minute time limit on it. Uh?!

That's all for now :) ...Check back later sometime to see if I've added more :p

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
I retract the haulage bit because Franklin can do the pick-up missions, which is a fair substitute.

I add though...

(7) Achievements and/or recording of stats
Would've been a nice touch if there was some sort of record, or reward, for doing well at tennis, golf, darts, whatever. Greedy I know but I feel that detail was there with SA (if obviously not achievements).

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
SPOILER

(8) Flight school
Reward for getting gold on all lessons in SA: Hunter attack helicopter.
Reward for getting gold on all lessons in V: Nothing. No reward, no Achievement.

Re: GTA V (Five)

I'm looking forward to GTA Online now.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
(9) Lack of interactivity
Lost count now of the number of stalls, shops and places (gym at the beach for example) where they look intriguing but you can't do anything. No buying, using or otherwise interacting.

(10) Abundance of nothing
How many ladders onto things with no point being climbed. How many places that take a bit of thought and effort to access, but are just empty. Nothing to really even look at, let alone collect. Feels like this is the case a lot more than in SA.

(11) No burglaries
Fun and money-spinning option in SA. Probably not fit with Michael, but don't see any reason Trevor, in particular, or Franklin might not do it.

Will there be more? Who knows...

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
(12) Shooting is far too easy
Pretty self explanatory, the shooting mechanics of the game are far too easy, Holding L2 or LT will lock onto them with out fail. Also if you go to the shooting range the cross hairs are completely wrong.

(13) Lack of Emphasis of Gangs
There are times where you can fight ballers but SA had it constantly. I just miss recruiting and territories. There is also just a lack of green clothes you can buy, but everyone else in your gang seems to wear it. - This is a plot failure rather than a mechanic problem. Franklin is a guy who is trying to escape the gang. I just would have preferred if he was rife within it. (I'm only like 33 percent finished so things could still change).

I agree with most of the things Jaime says, other than 2,5,6. In which I would say the game has gotten more realistic it would be sea sick unsettling to be invincible in cars. I didn't miss eating. I would have liked there to be like a license you could have or something to look at. I was disappointed when I passed it with Franklin and got nothing (but then again you might have to pass each lesson with a gold rating, and I didn't)

I think all of this can be forgiven for the improvements made to GTA IV.
Flying, Better driving mechanics, upgradeable vehicles, stock market, balls to the walls graphics. Upgradeable weapons. Keeping cars. FLYING. Keeping cars. Weapons. All of that.

Re: GTA V (Five)

The food thing, even if not as some essential survival thing, I think is a shame... Last night I was on 50% health as Trevor, passing all these restaurants, Italian one in particular, with no way to go in and get some food to regain health. In the end have to go the coast and buy soda from a vending machine... back to full health from a soda. And we have a strength stat, and stamina, so why not allow use of gym equipment to build them...

The gang thing is a real shame. Taking over territory in SA, and defending it, was great fun. Likewise that if you really made an enemy of a gang, you couldn't go into their area without getting shot at. I too looked deliberately for some Grove Street colours to wear, ended up disappointed. Recruiting (and related respect aspect), drive-by and other madness going with a loaded car into enemy territory... The more I think of it the more I miss all that.

Driving School was another bit of fun in SA not present here.

I might also say a mechanic in some sandbox games dating back to at least Scarface: The World Is Yours on PS2, would've been welcome; once you've built up a stock of a few different cars, you can phone a lackey and get them to drive it to wherever you are for you.

This is what I've suspected of the future of games for a while now. Improvements to the graphics, maybe even stratospheric improvements, but the "details"... the depth of the game... it's not advancing. GTA V is an awesome game, but it's lacking the depth, scope and details of a game that's approaching it's 9th birthday. On that subject, if not the thread subject, ahem, I'm fairly sure no RPG since Final Fantasy VII has matched that game's depth, scope and detail. Shame.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
I definately agree with the FF7 statement and I'm a huge fan of the franchise.

I keep buying square's (or whatever they want to be called now) new Final Fantasy releases just to get more and more impatient with them every time.

Games in this generation seem to focus too hard on making a game look nice. Rather than having some interesting ideas and... well... gameplay aspects. Main example of this would be FF13.
Looks absolutely beautiful! but I wouldn't rate it anywhere near the other games in the series because it was basically Linear, you had absolutely no freedom in that RPG and it simply wasn't enjoyable for me... No open world? No adventure aspect.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
The last FF I bothered with was 10. That was a very good game, but it wasn't as varied and deep as 7. I've loved other RPGs too, particularly the Shadow Hearts series, but when it comes down to it, again there's nothing like the depth and scope.

(14) Non-playable pool tables and no arcade machines
The pool table's sitting there in the pub but unlike in SA, all you can do now is look at it. SA pool wasn't great, needed a new mechanic, but that would've been a fun thing if done right. They were obviously fairly basic, but SA at least had a few arcade machines to play, whereas now we have none.

(15) Tennis, golf and darts lack of variety and no gambling option
They're all fun in their own ways, but... Tennis: Lack of variety, in opponents, surface and play styles... Darts: Why no 501 option, no different levels of opponent, no take-turns-going-first? Golf: Normal are generally terrible, Hard are generally faultless, a bit more variety, and wasn't there room for another course somewhere in the backwoods maybe? Even a little crazy golf somewhere...? And for all 3, no tournaments?! (Suppose they'll do something online for that, maybe.) You could gamble on pool in SA, here there's no option to gamble on any of the 3 sports! Wouldn't that have added a nice edge? And a way to make some cash...

(16) Dating
Unless I'm going to unlock something more in future, at the moment I've got Ursula on Trevor's contacts, and all you can do is make a phone call, pick her up, drive her back to her place. Woop-de-do. In SA, apart from choosing the right/wrong place to go, you got the dancing mini-game and you got things like one girl liking to go for a reckless drive or really fast or whatever, and then eventually access to a rare vehicle they owned or some other benefit. Lame and light by comparison in GTA 5, so far anyway.

Surprised the number has got this high. Wonder if there'll be more...

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
A few things not related to SA but just which could've been in there with a bit more effort, time, etc... Y'know, considering they put in yoga, and hours of TV and cinema (who the hell sits through all that...)

(17a) Skateboarding
Capcom put a really simple skateboarding mechanic into Dead Rising 2, I fail to see why Rockstar couldn't have done similar in this. We've got the ramps, we've got skateboarding shops, we could easily have races... but no.

(17b) Surfing
Waves, loads of ocean, surf shops... but we can't go surfing. Doesn't have to be anything amazing, just be a soul surfer and get to paddle out and ride a few waves.

(17c) Fishing
Again, loads of ocean, plus a few lakes/reservoirs, and boats to go out on, fish to be seen in the sea... but no fishing.

Also I already noted lack of Achievements/Rewards but I'm going to mention a couple of specific examples again... doing Triathlon #3 without pausing should've been worth some acknowledgment (even if it's just that's the only way to get gold, or an extra note next to your completion time) and also a few darts efforts: winning a 15-set match without losing a leg, hitting x number of bulls or 180s in consecutive legs, in that 15-set keeping track and finishing on every double at one point or another, and also the bull... I'd rather be getting Achievements for this sort of stuff than just doing missions I need to do anyway for the story... ho hum...

Re: GTA V (Five)

(18) Nothing to do after finished missions
So in the end - boredom. Just go collect spaceship parts and dive for missing submarine parts - whatever..

(19) Online issues
As you might know - serious matchmaking problems..

In the end - still a great game! Have it xbox.. Gamertag "DJ Tarmo" if anyone wants to have go online..

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
So easy to just fly around in a helicopter robbing stores online. Cops can't find you if you fly high enough.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
I'm maybe stretching a bit by now.

(20) Police Bribes & Resprays
Bribes were gone in IV, I think, but still. I liked the possibility during a dangerous chase of picking up a bribe to ease the pressure, or knowing where one was and desperately heading for it. Similarly, speeding for and into a respray shop. I don't think a realism argument explains it because I get up to 4-star wanted with SWAT after me and just hide under a bridge or in the subway for a while and they forget me...

(21) Taxi Missions
Also crud in IV, from my understanding. Gone is time-limit, speed bonus, 5, 10, etc in-a-row bonuses, let alone fun like jumps and nitrous. Who on earth bothers for average about $200... no big rewards, no creativity to the missions, dull dull dull. Considering they omitted Fire Fighter, Paramedic and Vigilante altogether, they really should've made more effort for this...

(22) Weapon Skill & Dual-wield
Quite a cool thing in SA, improving your skills with particular weapons, and especially when it reached a point you could dual-wield. Who doesn't want to dual-wield pistols and Uzis, at least. Can you see Trevor dual-wielding grenade launchers? I wish.

(23) Vehicle Modding
No nitrous, all you seem to be able to do with lights on any vehicle is make them shine whiter, very limited bumper options (usually just front) and the only significant stat-change you can cause seems to be to acceleration... A tiny bit of improvement to braking if you want, but nothing for speed or traction. No modding police vehicles! Why? Imagine if they had Vigilante missions, and you could in advance mod a police car up with roll-cage, armour, bullet-proof tires, a big ol' bar/bumper... bullet-proof windows! Bullet-proof windows should be available on all cars for that matter.

(24) Seat Belts
Make it a mod, if necessary, but really... Okay on a bike I'm gonna get thrown, break my neck, die, but going through the windshield of a car? How about you get in, you hold up on the d-pad for a moment or so and that has you put your seat belt on. Then fine, if you're in a rush or don't bother, the danger of being thrown through the windshield, even a good road safety lesson :p ...because it happening as it is... is just irritating.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
windshield flying has at least been toned down since IV, but you are right with a lot of these things, small things that could dramatically extend the longevity of the game.

The one thing that really irritated me with this game was the linear feel to the missions, whereas going back even to the original game you always felt in control of your actions, where as with this edition it is one mission after another with no real options for deviation, especially if i want to unlock something, or make enough money to actually buy a property without doing the next 5 mission which equate to a single heist, worse when the FIB take the cash too.

Have nearly hit the 100% completion mark (93%) at last check, so might hit 100% then start a new game and see how it fares with my new knowledge. I was planning on buying GTAV for the PS4 when it comes out too, but given life after the missions and online sint really that thrilling i will probably keep my money. I have fifa14 to start yet anyway, something else that could benefit from looking back at some old releases to help it be be more fun in the long term.

Re: GTA V (Five)

Badge image
I've mainly been sticking to "in comparison to SA" but other things do annoy me. I thought there should've been more events with Dom, I'd have loved to see some sort of insane marathon where like the quads into the plane, you land and there are bikes or quads waiting and some reckless downhill with them and you have to jump onto the wings of a plane and then, yoga-style, balance there while it climbs high, before getting thrown a parachute and flying through checkpoints and... I get carried away, but I stick to the principal. As it was they ended too soon and, I'm not even sure I found the conclusion funny really, as too definitive an end. I also wanted to have more conversations with the dog :D

I'm hopeful about the Expansions/DLC they might end up doing, if they're not solely focused on GTA Online, because it's a helluva canvas, the broad strokes are there in terms of game area, scenery, vehicles, weapons, gameplay... it just needs more depth, variety and interactivity.

Otherwise my thought is of the eventual PC version and what modders could end up doing with it...

Re: GTA V (Five)

(25) Stock Car Racing & Bike Trials
Remember the stadium in SA? Stock Car Racing, hey actually wasn't there also a Destruction Derby type of thing? I'm pretty sure there was. And the motocross bike trials. This is not to mention the NRG bike trials/course around the dock and, say memory again, wasn't there also one with BMX...? Again I'm pretty sure. GTA V has the bikes and ramps, but again not the content...

Re: GTA V (Five)

"Empty Content" Mysteries to me:
(1) Redwood Lights Track
What's the point of putting in a track that's under construction? Can only imagine it's going to be finished as DLC of some sort, cheap...
(2) Vinewood Racetrack
No horse races or anything taking place. Nothing to watch, nothing to bet on, nothing to take part in, what's the point...
(3) Arenas.
Nicely rendered, but... nothing happens in them. Nothing to watch, nothing to bet on, nothing to take part in, what's the point...
(4) Bolingbroke Penitentiary & Whatever the other Penitentiary is
You don't get put in them when busted, or as part of any mission. And you can only really get in and do any sort of exploring by cheating.
(5) Fort Zancudo
Only related mission is stealing the helicopter and then something later on I vaguely remember being nearby or on the edges and some hassle with the place... Military don't come out when you're at 5-star wanted anywhere on the map. Pain to get into and try to steal anything. Urghh.

Also, lazy/silly things about the game:
(1) Who saw? I kill someone up a deserted mountainside, with a silenced weapon, and I get 1-star wanted. (Yeah the police don't get to you but why even wanted, who saw or reported?) Same thing anywhere remote.
(2) Properties income 1... I kinda liked that you used to have to go and collect income from whatever property. Not for all of them on this, considering the size, or perhaps not weekly, so it just builds up, but then you have to go collect and maybe once you're in the area a property-related mission triggers...
(3) Properties income 2... It's pretty lame. Why not some missions to earn real decent bonuses? It feels like something treated quite lazily, because Trevor's McKenzie Field has this element, but then what they ran out of time or ideas for others? Even simple things, like with the Impound give it 5-in-a-row, 10-in-a-row, etc bonus.
(4) Probably a good third of the map is mountains. Pointless mountains. There should've been less mountains, and more to do on the ones that are there. Downhill races, some with snow and so some rudimentary sledge, ski, snowboard or snowmobile transport to play around on, if not do some sort of race or stunt course... Or flatten one and make it a second golf course.
(5) No plane races. Yep the risk of crashing into eachother but that would add to the mad fun maybe, or else since the mechanics are there with Flight School, time trial competition like Red Bull's Air Races.
(6) General races. Lack of them.
(7) Car sets. I loathe getting into a lowrider or jeep because it seems to turn every other vehicle into a lowrider or off-road of some sort. And a few taxis. This was acceptable limitation of memory or whatever on PS2 but that it's still happening is irritating. I've been playing for quite a while now with no sign of an Imponte Phoenix (my personal favourite vehicle.

Moan, moan, moan.
