The life of Harry....

Badge image
So the remarkeable and unlikely life of our Harry continues. Despite having the face like a slapped cows arse, ginger hair and a cockney geezer manner he somehow produced Jamie Redknapp with his wife, a fairly good looking fella. Then he fell into the job of West Ham Manager with rumours that he stabbed Billy Bonds in the back and went on to be seen as very succesful with a mix of great young players produced by Graham Carr, but losing his job after wasting the Rio Ferdinand money. Marco Boogers anyone?

From there he became Director of Football at Portsmouth, before taking over from Manager Graham Rix. After spending a lot of the likes of Paul Merson and Teddy Sheringham he took Pompey back to the Prem. After a couple of seasons of keeping them up he left Pompey after they brought in a Director of Football above him. From there he took over at Southampton and took them to relegation. Not content with life in the Championship he then left for a new club.... Portsmouth!

Back at Pompey he spend a couple of fortunes to save them from relegation and then get to an FA Cup win. However as the debts started to catch up with the Harry jumped ship to Spurs, bottom of the league and in a position where they could only do better. Loads more money spent and taking advantage of some great young players, Modric, Bale and so on he built a good side. His personality got him off a HMRC charge and he seemed set for the England job... however his luck turned with Roy getting the job... now he is out at Spurs!

So what next in the life of Harry, where he seems to bounce along with a lot of luck...

My theory is that he will be given the job of Holland Manager, cue many jokes about his hair matching the shirts!

I could imagine a job-swap, with him going to Everton and David Moyes to Spurs. Maybe if Mark Hughes struggles at QPR next season, or even maybe Allardyce at West Ham, he'll turn up here or there after a break and bit of punditry.

I have quite a lot of dislike for Redknapp. Nothing to do with his physical appearance, which I wouldn't lower myself to insulting, nor his questionable business dealings, but rather his lack of loyalty. Similar reasons I'll never like Steve Bruce. I don't like his past, but I especially hate his coy evasiveness to questions about the England job. I'm pretty certain at one point he went so far as to claim it didn't matter who was manager at Spurs. Something like that, trying to play down the impact if he might just happen to be offered the England job... I think it's much more than a coincidence that Spurs' season went awry, almost collapsed, during and after that time. He was lucky to be there, he had a great thing going, and it quickly became obvious he would've left in a flash if the England job had been offered to him. choose your favourite expletive him. Chap's 65 too, with a recent health scare, so not a bad idea to get someone younger in too.

Crossroads for the club really. Who they appoint will be a big indication of what their level of ambition is.

No chance. He won't go anywhere where there isn't a big wad of money to spend.

I've enjoyed watching Spurs so sad to see that end, though he sets up most his teams to play decent football.

When you actually take a step back and look at his career though, he has actually spent a lot of time at clubs. 4 years at Spurs is a long time nowadays.

Think he was a victim of his early season success. Bumbling around 4th & 5th for the main part of the season and and the pressure would probably have never come on when they went on that shocking run. It was the fact that they were talked about as potential title contenders around the turn of the year and just ran out of steam.

Spurs seem to want to be a feeder club, once a team starts talking about resale value that is it for them. They spend a lot on some young players then wait an age for them to become good before selling.

Spurs believe they should win the league every year as well, so I think the next fella will have problems.

I don't know... I kinda doubt he can be that picky. He's not going to get in at Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City or Arsenal, even if a vacancy comes up. Liverpool have just changed manager, Newcastle are doing well, Sunderland have only fairly recently got O'Neill... There are only so many clubs who are likely to give a manager much dosh to fling about. His best chance would probably be if Hughes stumbles with QPR. London club, money to spend, ambition, but not currently a "big club". If not them though, where could he turn up? He's definitely not going to a Wigan or Swansea, and I don't see him going abroad so the path has to lead to an Everton-type. (I hear rumour he might go outside Europe to one of the rich retirement leagues, but then he'd pretty much have to forget ever getting the England job.)
