The referee ignored U21 Netherlands's protests and gave Jan Zuid a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to U21 Netherlands getting a freekick after 11 minutes play. Jan Zuid hit a great ball. Avgust Kobler made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jordy van der Vaart in the 14th minute of play. The supporters of U21 Netherlands booed when U21 Slovenia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Abdulaziz Lipić didn't get a good kick on the ball. Quinten Waaentz fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 20th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Avgust Kobler having to interfere. In the 30th minute Ernst Ottens shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Avgust Kobler saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 31 minutes, Gerhard Kolarič mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the U21 Slovenia and the U21 Netherlands players grew even worse after the yellow card. After 31 played minutes U21 Slovenia got a freekick which was hit by Gerhard Kolarič. After a defensive mix-up in U21 Slovenia's zone, Jordy van der Vaart stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Avgust Kobler came out of the goal and Jordy van der Vaart tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ožbolt Volmut's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Frans De Munck read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 34th minute of play. Negovan Kermavner could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 37th minute of the match, but Frans De Munck made a huge save. Avgust Kobler took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jordy van der Vaart, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 40th minute Rob van der Werff shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Avgust Kobler saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 45th minute, Ernst Ottens hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Negovan Kermavner stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After having played for 52 minutes, Quinten Waaentz managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. U21 Netherlands's supporters crossed their fingers, but Quinten Waaentz was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 54th minute of the match, Jordy van der Vaart got a very nice opportunity to score, but Avgust Kobler was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. After 55 played minutes Quinten Waaentz rounded U21 Slovenia's defense and shot a beautiful shot into goal via left pole - 0-1. U21 Netherlands's Frans De Munck played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Negovan Kermavner in the 60th minute of play. The crowd rose to their feet as U21 Netherlands's Quinten Waaentz slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Avgust Kobler. That made the score 0-2 after 63 minutes of play. U21 Slovenia made a substitution. Častislav Intihar replaced Negovan Kermavner. U21 Netherlands's Koos Lammers was substituted for Ramon Ommen. If Leon Marinič had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 77 minutes into the match, U21 Slovenia's goalkeeper Avgust Kobler had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Jordy van der Vaart. With a little luck, U21 Slovenia's Avgust Kobler got control of the ball when Jordy van der Vaart tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 82nd minute U21 Netherlands were awarded a corner. Rob van der Werff went to the cornerflag to take it. After 82 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for U21 Slovenia! U21 Slovenia's Avgust Kobler proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 93rd minute of the match, managed to save U21 Slovenia from getting a goal against them. In the 94th minute, Abdulaziz Lipić hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After some fancy dribbling in the 95th minute, Quinten Waaentz managed to get in a good position for a shot. U21 Netherlands's supporters rose to their feet, but Quinten Waaentz was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Avgust Kobler breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After some careless play in the U21 Slovenia defense, Daniël Ierlandt kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Avgust Kobler. The U21 Slovenia fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Avgust Kobler should have stopped the shot. U21 Netherlands's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
