Leon Nesto yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 1-0. After a defensive mix-up in NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's zone, Hilario Avellaneda stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Leon Nesto came out of the goal and Hilario Avellaneda tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Albano Asteri's late challenge caught a RIVER's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Albano Asteri helped the player get up and apologised. Albano Asteri kicked well hit freekick during the 9th minute of the match. A hard shot 12 in the game by Pascual Austin from a close distance when the talented Leon Nesto managed to make a qualified save. NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's players were relieved. Pascual Austin who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 14thth minute tested the skills of Leon Nesto when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Leon Nesto made an important save on a dangerous shot by Pascual Austin in the 21st minute. Robert Rojas was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 24th played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. Leon Nesto showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marcelo Salas, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. In the 31st minute, Baltasar Rios hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Robert Rojas, 32 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. Angel Comizzo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Gabriel Toli, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. The supporters of NEWELL´S OLD BOYS booed when RIVER was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 40 match minutes in a wonderful position. Leonel Frutos didn't get a good kick on the ball. After recieving a nice pass, NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's Gabriel Toli tried to score from far away in the 41st minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. A collision led to RIVER getting a freekick after 43 minutes play. Leonel Frutos hit a great ball. 45 minutes into the game, Hilario Avellaneda was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. RIVER's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave NEWELL´S OLD BOYS the free kick. Hilario Avellaneda kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. Angel Comizzo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Antonio Mundo, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Gabriel Toli stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Teodoro Inge's late challenge caught a NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. But to his dismay, Pascual Austin quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-0. Robert Rojas recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 63rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's zone, Marcelo Salas stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Leon Nesto came out of the goal and Marcelo Salas tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 68th minute, Pascual Austin ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Leon Nesto was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-0. After a rather tough play, NEWELL´S OLD BOYS's Erasmo Millrick got a free kick in the 73rd minute. Marcelo Salas scored 4-0 in the 77th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Leon Nesto, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. RIVER's Arnaldo Xacintu was substituted for Marcos Vargas. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Gabriel Toli during the 80th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Gabriel Toli hit a great freekick 80 minutes into the match. Angel Comizzo didn't succeed in stopping the ball in the 85th minute, which inside left pole to 4-1. 89 minutes into the match, RIVER's goalkeeper Angel Comizzo had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Antonio Mundo. Angel Comizzo made an important save on a dangerous shot by Antonio Mundo in the 89th minute. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. RIVER fully deserved thier win.
