Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Old Glory the free kick. Fabrício Peixoto kicked well hit freekick during the 7th minute of the match. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Mário Lago in the 8th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Cacá Albuquerque saved Gremio PortoAlegrense JA from getting behind. Fabrício Peixoto recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 11th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. João Carlos Carvalho showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Fabrício Peixoto in the 14th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Osmar Carvalho in the 15th minute of play forced Old Glory's goalkeeper João Carlos Carvalho to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Kaká Marques got his second yellow card in the match during the 22nd minute which meant that he had to leave the ground. An unexpectedly hard shot by Mário Lago in the 24th minute of play forced Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's goalkeeper Cacá Albuquerque to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After 25 minutes of play Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's Fabrício Peixoto was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. After some careless play in the Old Glory defense, Jardel Montenegro kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of João Carlos Carvalho. The Old Glory fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that João Carlos Carvalho should have stopped the shot. After the first half Gremio PortoAlegrense JA were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Osmar Carvalho stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. If Alexsandro Meireles had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 54th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Mário Lago in the 55th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Cacá Albuquerque prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Jardel Montenegro received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 62nd minute. João Carlos Carvalho tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Mário Lago fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 68th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cacá Albuquerque having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Telmo Peres in the 71st minute of play forced Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's goalkeeper Cacá Albuquerque to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After having played for 98 minutes, João Adolfo Mota managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Gremio PortoAlegrense JA's supporters crossed their fingers, but João Adolfo Mota was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.
