I've been a regular anime fan for about a year now, having started (late) with the original Naruto series, Bleach, and am now watching Yakitate.
Any really good anime series that the rest of us may have missed?

I've not watched any for years, and never one of those full-on series, but of the more old-school stuff I liked all three of Cyber City Oedo 808 and standalone Vampire Hunter D.

Detective Conan episodes from the 90's have been an interesting diversion the last few weeks. The graphics are pretty standard, if you're attentive (or watch too many episodes back to back) you may notice some repeated character forms. The bonus is in the crafty ways in which the crimes are committed and in seeing all those old "new" technologies...
It was difficult to believe that the September/October set of Naruto Shippuuden's were given the title of Naruto. So many problems with proportions in the faces. The most recent, however, had some solid artistry, but it appears they have been relying on flashbacks to bolster the clip lengths. Hope they can get a reliable crew and keep working on the story in the face of the rebuilding of Fukushima, and it was nice to see the most recent story offer a perspective of that destruction with awareness..
The new Bleach, as usual, looks really good, and the story line is pretty interesting. Gotta admit, it's a bit disappointing seeing Kurosaki regain his powers so quickly. It seems like there could have been more done to develop the X-cution and others. Similar sentiments for the Bleach crew, though they haven't done anything involving the disaster.
Well, I'm still asking; any good anime series?

The year-end break is over, and both Bleach and Naruto have the main char in training and personal growth modes.
Naruto seems forever to be waiting for this great war, which could be good, considering if it really is a "great ninja war", there better be some darn glossy looking fight scenes and solid story lines. The graphics are mostly back up to par with head dimensions, but the Shinto spirituality explanations get a bit thin sometimes.
Bleach is just kinda strange, with the training going on inside a game-system. I'm left asking, Why don't they just capture the bad-guy into the game-system and erase all his health?Still, it's good to see some exterior char development and the return of the early crew. Now where is that busty boss lady? They spent alot of time settting up her char...
I think I'm at about 2003 w/ the Conan series, and I gotta say the graphics are miles beyond the earliest versions. The series is currently paying more attention to the main plot advancement than the murder cases, which is nice, but the murder styles get less complicated as a result (or I've just been watching so long I could actually be a detective...).

Yea, my generation had a love for angst and bitterness. probably why I enjoy these later, relatively lighter fair series. they're such a change from the popular anime of my youth, which primarily focused on despondent hard-asses whose renown was their "quick wit" of sarcasm and general lack of care for anything but revenge or just staying alive in a cold chaotic world...

The latest Naruto had some nice looking graphics in flashback. Only problem with flashback, you generally know who's gonna live, so the story is a bit, well, predictable. Still, rather touching stuff, I nearly teared up.

Just as a correction for my early disparaging comment toward the Detective Conan series; the animation, in general, has bordered on good to amazing from 2002 to at least 2005.
The 2004 series has been the strongest in animation, so far. (I'm working from oldest to newest). Any repetitious background was long gone by 2000, and 2004-5 had some amazing attention to detail in frame settings, proportions, etc.
As the half-retarded-intellectual-bastard-child of studio, I suggest viewing this series from at least 2003 into 2005 (where I am right now) for purview of some excellent graphical attention to background detail.
You may have to sift through some graphically average episodes, but even those normally hold at least a few solid frames.

Hoorah for great combat scenes! Both Bleach and Naruto busted out some nice combat series these last few episodes.
Naruto definitely wins the exciting storyline award for the week.
Bleach was graphically superior as usual, but even with all the plot twists, it's like they've either been too slow with advancing the story or too tame with the fighting. I'm picking the latter as my choice. I don't know if it's laziness on the part of the production team, or the story line just calls for way too much dwelling on the past, but with all the flashbacks, I've felt like Kurosaki's a patsy B* for most of this series.

Ahh, Naruto has been so beautiful... Blood, guts, back-stories and some really nice graphics.
Bleach has at least been interesting. Funny to watch some of the combat scenes between the Shinigami and XCution, and utterly disappointing in others.

Still loving the Detective Conan series. Just about everything from 2005 onward is simply so wonderful in background detail. I'm currently in late 2008, and kinda dreading when I actually have to wait for the new weekly episodes.

Re: Best Anime

Whee!! Fighting! Sometimes...
Naruto is tying in a bunch of old characters and making some interesting moves in advancing the entire story.
Bleach has done the same, though with a smaller background of characters to choose from, many of the usual suspects are involved. Plenty of combat and scenes without excess flashbacks.

Re: Best Anime
By apwall21 - 05-04-2012 00:05
Well, it's official. Bleach has closed the series with a basically terrible conclusion, offering everything I hate to see in stupid goodbye episodes.
Ahh Bleach, such a great start, with the Rescue from Soul Society and Aizen/Hecho Mundo story lines.
Naruto has called forth the troops (80,000 shinobi and samuri) for the battle with Akatsuki, and both sides have some massive firepower. With this many characters, I would be really surprised if there aren't another 2 seasons of on-field combat and back stories before Naruto even gets some serious combat.

The latest Naruto looked SEXY. Truly art. The story was everything I love in ninja tales. Lots of boring chit-chat and hours spent on... ok no, it was BOMBS!! BOMBS EVERYWHERE!
Nice start to The War, I must say, and I look forward to many more excellent episodes.

Re: Best Anime
By geoclphredux - 13-05-2012 23:07
Wait wait wait, apwall21, are you even attempting to watch the other animes that people have suggested to you?
No offence, I mean Bleach and Naruto are good, but very mainstream, I mean everyone kind of knows of them and the standards of quality within those animes are therefore going to be good. You should pay some more attention to the ones people have suggested.
For Example:
Ghost in the Shell's second season, (called Stand Alone Complex. 2nd GIG) has remarkable artistry and a ridiculously clever narrative (especially the first season's narrative). The violent scenes in it aren't just some random blind attacking session at 100000mph with speed lines, all the attacks a thought out like a real military squadron and have terrific quality.
Sorry for the long message but I just feel that you are missing out on some amazing stories out there. Death Note, Code Geass... Even The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzamiya is a worth a watch, it's hilarious, very heartwarming and some odd episodes have some unsuspected violence in it lol

Re: Best Anime
By apwall21 - 14-05-2012 03:39
I have to reoffer my caveat. I watched some original Ghost in the Shell and such back in the 90's. I don't mind some of that stuff, but I can't do the bleak and black hearted tales of pure violence and revenge. It took me years to realize that, but I just don't watch it anymore. That doesn't mean the artistry isn't good, and the story doesn't deserve to be told, only that I can't watch. Call it easily affected, but it's a preference choice.
I'll look into the new Ghost Stand Alone on your recommendation.

Re: Best Anime
By apwall21 - 17-05-2012 23:20
Ok. I have to say, the graphics in Ghost are quality, as expected. The story lines are interesting. There's much reliance on character form (physical shape) to give depth to the villains, as opposed to development, as the primary goal of each episode is action, and there is little time for such niceties as "why".
Generally it is really solid physics responses, even if it's based on non-existent "future tech". True to your word, the tactics are mostly realistic, if not regularly involving a few too many physical enhancement requirements. Few too many shots of a half-naked lady in front of a sports car with squealing tires, to just keep the interest of the audience (obviously primarily males 16-35). Enigmatic endings are interesting, but I'm watching the episodes in quick sequence so their getting a bit old. The AI/Life discussion is certainly interesting. Last episode was 17, a wine cellar episode.

Well, I nailed my prediction on the Naruto back-story bit. So far it's been fairly active as far as combat, but lots of back-story involvement between combatants.

Gem. Brilliant. Up to Episode 9. Really really really hope they didn't burn it all out on the first 10 episodes.

Re: Best Anime

Epic necromantic bump. The current anime season contains what has (for me at least) been a diamond in the rough in Kotoura-San, and I hope it continues to be worth watching instead of fizzling out. It probably won't ever be a contender for 'best' anime, but it cannot be underestimated either.
See at first glance, Kotoura-San seemed like just another generic anime that wasn't worth touching with a 10 foot pole. Then I actually watched the first episode. And it was so much more than advertised... the first 10 minutes made me sad and the only thing that kept me from crying projectile tears was the knowledge that the main characters life would get better eventually. Even when things do get better however, there's still a lot of drama for a show that was billed as a 'romantic comedy'...
Despite the drama however, it is still a romantic comedy that's fairly cliche (mind reader + pervert = predictable punchline) and kind of naughty at times. In my opinion, the comedy is a bit weak, but also necessary to prevent the anime from being depressing and emo, like it might have turned out if the comedy wasn't there. I hate sad stories.
tl;dr version: Kotoura-San is an anime that doesn't look at all promising on the surface, but you have to watch the first episode before you can accurately judge whether or not you will enjoy it.
