Impact of Shooting (as a player skill)

Badge image
This is data collected across all of my games this season

These are the players

Can you tell just based on the statistics which player is which ? (ie Match the shots on target, goals to total shots taken and goals to shots on target percentages to the player) ?

there is alot of unknows when guessing. a few questions in my mind. did you only play shortpassing ? or mixed in wingplays ? DId yoou mix who started vs who was playing the later part of the game ? did you rotate them in the positions they had? since depending on what pixel they have they will get better or worse chances etc. If you can share abit mroe about the background when you revel the result it would give an even better picture on how we value players vs how they preform.

Player A : Goodwin
Player B : Markcrow
Plater C : Paddie
Player D : Dillion
Player E : Schutt

Over the entire season I would say I played 55% long balls, 15% short pass and 30% wings.
Always switching into wings for the final part of the game, but when I switch was dependent on game situation (anywhere from halftime to 80 mins)

Typical setup
Long balls and short pass
Strikers _ Paddle and Dillon
Attacking mid - Schutt and Markcrow

Wings
Strikers - Goodwin and Dillon
Attacking mid - Paddle
Schutt variable (CM, DM, AM, support winger, kinda threw him around over the season)

Markcrow typically subbed out for Goodwin.

A: Markcrow
B: Schutt
C: Paddle
D: Goodwin
E: Dillon

Players coming from a bench have always higher % of everything. Paddle's 9 intelligence may help with shot accuracy but I don't know.

So, what's the correct answer? :)

Re: Impact of Shooting (as a player skill)

Just by watching 3D games i feel my midfielders with few shoting balls have the same or higher shoting-goals ratio than strikers with 9-10 shoting

hmm..I am actually more interested how the numbers look when those numbers are divided into different competitions but competitions have to be carefully selected - for example you can not(most likely) compare senior top division to national cup group stage. Most likely in national cup there are weaker teams so similar strength competitions would have to be compared to similar strength competitions..

I'll reveal after the opening day of the season just to see if we can get some more guesses by then.

Also I now realize I did not specify something very important. These are LEAGUE matches only.
I need to get better at proof reading....

This poster is correct

So the logical follow up question is - do you feel like shooting has value as a trained skill ? Do you think an entire season of league games is not a big enough sample size to draw any conclusions ?

Re: Impact of Shooting (as a player skill)

i think it is not enought sample size for sure.

But still very suprising for me =)

So I had noticed through watching games Mackrow seemed to have an unusual knack for scoring. Which is why I thought Id look into it more and start a discussion.

Does anyone else have a player oit there also outperforming their shooting skill ?

Try to place Markcrow more upfront to get him more shots taken. I assume his shot conversion rate will instantly fall!

Right now using mzlive I can see that he only took 43 shots, from which 33 went on target. Compared to Phenix Paddle who took 139 shots from which 122 hit the target!

But interesting numbers indeed.

Re: Impact of Shooting (as a player skill)

I actually have player like makrow that has same kind of succes rate than him last season.

http://mzplayer.se/?id=0711125480

Playing Midfield

Shots to target 78.57%
Shot conversion rate 21.43%
Shot conversion on target rate 27.27%

To look at it they are actually almost indentical only thing is that my player shot 4 times less than your player as my player might sometimes play DM aswell.

If I were to move him to striker position these numbers would see great fall. He played striker for one season getting following numbers.

Playing Striker

Shots to target 80.95%
Shot conversion rate 7.94%%
Shot conversion on target rate 9.80%

So what I believe and it probably makes a lot of sense aswell is that the game checks your teams capability of scoring not a single invidual that actually is showing to shoot it. We could also have long talk about how and why these players perform "better" in midfield but maybe that's for some other day.

But some statistics from 4 past seasons of my team shot conversion rate numbers are shooting of 4 highest players in field.

S82 : 10-10-9-8 14,68%
S81 : 10-9-9-8 14,08%
S80 : 9-9-9-8 10,14%
S79 : 9-9-9-8 11,51% We had 1 inactive team in series.

There probably is alot of more variables to scoring than only shooting but if we look at these numbers you clearly can see how my team has improved in scoring past 4 seasons.
