Youth squads

Just been doing some calculations and having a youth team is not cheap. 468k minimum a season.

23.5k x 13 weeks academy
12.5k x 13 weeks coaches

Now to put that in perspective you could probably buy 2 or 3 very good youth 19yo players for that amount. Is your youth team bringing in that amount of money or players in return?

The money you can make by selling your youth players later on makes the youth academy worth it.

Maintaining 23 youth players costs R$ 1704300 per season (in my local currency). So, on paper we are spending R$ 5112900 for 23 players across 3 seasons. I'm pretty sure you can recover your money by selling those players if you train well. That's assuming all the 23 players will be kept of course, which probably won't happen. But the truth is that most of the time you will recover your money anyway by selling some of your wonderkids. If you're lucky enough, one player will be enough to pay for your academy for seasons. Take this player as an example: https://www.managerzone.com/?p=players&pid=212892584

If you train them well*

In short, if you don't have an active youth academy, you will save money, but you might be missing out on even more money.

Here is some of my brightest homegrown players currently.

http://mzplayer.se/?id=1104094822

They aren't world class by any means but most of them are great. I would argue you couldn't buy players like this with the budget you calculated you would save by not having youths at all.

Homegrown players sold last 4 seasons over 100k €
740k €
156k €
1594k €
299k €
808k €
208k €
418k €
418k €
1499k €

4 seasons 6140k €
per season 1535k €

478k € to youths
325k € to coaches
803k € per season
732k € earnings per season from selling homegrowns.

There is alot more variables to this than this calculation shows. Cup earnings, Training camp costs, U23 salaries, Senior coaches, Players you fully develop. I also rarely sell players with potential at the age of 19. They either continue to U23 squad or get sold with 101€ or if they don't get even sold with that price I just kick them out. I don't think that managers really sell top potential at 19yo cos they want to develop the best by themselves or if they end up selling something very good they are in desperate need of money. You also need to look at the value of the fully developed players that comes out of the youths as you don't need to spend millions of money to get one player to fill the spots in the field.

About buying good potential or ready players from market also comes with high price at least for me it try to look that top potential and usually need to pay over 2M € for those players.

Buying very good players from the market that are still in the team last 4 seasons over 100k €
525k €
2098k €
2288k €
808k €
2400k €
2680k €

I also bought and sold with a loss two players during last 4 seasons
2550k € Sold 1000k € -1550k €
1863k € Sold 1167k € -696k €

So if I need to pay about 2M € for a player that goes all the way to the senior opening 11 I could easily say that every player that I fully develop is atleast worth about 2M €. Without having youths I would save that much of a money in 2-3 seasons to get one player from transfer market. To put it in perspective I should get 1 top youth out of 23 youths to make it run for itself. For me I usually end up with like 6 of these out of 23 youths. Its just an average but even if you get couple of bad sets of youths in long run it is more profitable to have those youths. Like in the link above where I show my players there is 7 U23 players that all attended my youth squad at the same time.

Youth squad doesn't show its worth instantly but once the train is running it doesn't stop generating money.

And to end this long post... One beautiful morning your "super star" will be worthless thanks to bad maxing on crucial skill but its the name of the game. Okey maybe nor worthless but worth much less 😉
