Training Youths Since Scouting Reports

Hey,

I'm considering a return to MZ after some time off and was looking to make sure I understand the 'new' scouting report.

I left before it came out, and used to train up speed/stamina to 8 first to see if they could get to 9+ before deciding whether to cut or keep. Then working the other key skills up after that.

However with the new 'high potential' and 'low potential' skills being reported early I was planning to pivot to train up the low potential skill(s) first to see a baseline of the worst case training scenario (if the player maxed at the low for all other skills). Then working up the other skills once I know they make the cut.

I just wanted to confirm my understanding:

1) Will all other skills always be equal to or better than the 'lowest potential'?

2) I have looked quite a bit, has anyone posted a range for max balls for each star rating?

Ex:
4 High = 8-10
3 High = 7-9
2 High = 6-8
3 Low = 6-8
2 Low = 5-7
1 Low = 4-6

3) Any other tips for training in the post Scouting Report era?

Cheers and Thanks!

Have a read of the youth potential tool thread on the main forum: https://www.managerzone.com/?p=forum&sub=topic&topic_id=12509166&forum_id=10&sport=soccer

It has a good discussion about how we think the tool works. Training up speed and stamina to 8+ is still a viable tactic. But you have more choice now, training up the low skills first as you say is a good example.

The main thing now is you can exchange players who have low potential in the main skills for new youths so you've got a better chance of training youths that will go on to be good players.

One way to use the new scouting reports is to help eliminate skills to train a player in initially or even to help eliminate which players to train at all.

For example, a player with Speed as a low potential skill is going to max speed at 4-6 most likely and won’t ever make your senior team or bring much value on the transfer market (unless he has a 3 or 4 high potential in Keeping of course).

On the other hand, a player with a 3 or 4 high potential in Speed and Stamina gives you assurance that they certainly have value in those skills, you wouldn’t need to train those skills right away.

My strategy, as it is currently evolved, is to look at high and low potential skills and project where the player could go. For example, a SP BC high with KE SH lies means he’s not going to be a striker, but if his TA or AP skills max out well he could be a defender or winger. So I would train him first in ST, TA or AP to max.

Every time a youth hits a bad maxing I go back to my training evaluation for him and eliminate that tree. So if this player maxed poorly in TA, my only path left for him would be as a winger. If he then maxed AP poorly I would know he’s out. Exchange him at the next opportunity or cut him at 19.

No other skills will fall below those with the low potential. They may tie it thought.

1 star low potential would be lucky to make a 6 (most of mine so far have topped at 4 or 5)
2 star low potential has a much broader range. In the discussion and my experience these skills can get as high as 8. Or as low as 5.

To date no one has found a low potential 3 that I am aware of.

Best of luck and hope you

I havent changed anything when training youths ever since scout report arrived,it only made it harded to pick players position.

I have couple of interesting players in my squad who have I bought in:

a striker who has 4* in tackling and heading(shooting 9, heading 10, tackling 4). I wouldn't have trained him as a striker if he would have arrived into my academy.

Midfielder who has 4* in speed and heading(speed 10, a.passing 10, heading 2). I would have trained him as a striker.

You train your youths depending on your strategy. If you’re using them to be competitive in U18 competitions maxings in primary skills at 7/8 isn’t too bad so you typically would exchange them and keep them as they would be very competitive U18’s.

If your strategy is to make money off youth then the best business is when you have bad maxings exchange them, use youth customisation every 3 seasons and develop only potential using HP’s and LP’s as a good guide.
