Questions from the Hungarian forum

Hi Managers!

A couple of questions arose from the Hungarian forum. I hope you can help.

1: What do you think? Is the goalkeeper’s primary ability to ballcontrol, or is it negligible?

2: Do players have "hidden skills"? Abilities that are not included in the visible 12.

Thank you for your answers!

Thanks for posting your question Warday. First of all, I think that a goalkeeper's primary ability is not limited to one skill only, else everybody would train their goalkeeper in that single skill, and here you've got a world class goalkeeper.

I believe the primary skills of a goalkeeper are obviously keeping (first and foremost), secondly stamina and thirdly Play Intelligence.

The reason I believe it is like this is explained. A ten keeper, will be keep the ball out of the cage better than a nine. For how long can he do that depends on his stamina. I think that the greater the stamina, the longer he will keep saving the ball for your team. The lesser the stamina, the quicker his keeping skills deteriorates during the match.

Now coming to Play intelligence, I believe P.I enables the keeper to have better positioning when facing opponents and to better decide when to rush towards an opponent's striker, or when to "dive".

I know I've kept you waiting, now the more interesting part. Eventually ball control has a major effect on the performance of a goal keeper. This skill enables the keeper to better handle (or hold the ball - name it how you like) when making a save. This is helpful specially when saving a long and powerful shot from a distance. A 10 ball control keeper will catch powerful shots no problem, compare to a six ball control keeper, who can see the ball slip easily from his hands and concede a goal, particularly when his stamina is low.

Aerial passing and set plays equally have their importance, but I think this is not the subject of our conversation here.

I hope this answer brings more clarity to our fellow Hungarian managers!!

1. Ball control is down the list of importance for Keepers amongst top managers. 1. Keeping, 2. Stamina, 3. Play Intel 4. Aerial Passing then the opinions vary a little. Depending on manager the next order is Ball Control/Passing/Set Plays.

2. There’s a whole topic of not a few dedicated to “Hidden Skills”. I’d have a read of that. I’m of the opinion they definitely exist.
