Players with the lightning bolt are younger players who have a scouting report. In the scouting report you can see 2 of the best and 2 of the worst skills.
The number of stars is calculated for the 4 best skills and 4 worst skills, it means:
4 stars: maxings of these 4 skills together is minimum 37 (so at least 1 skill will go to ten)
3 stars: maxings between 34 and 36 pucks
2 stars: maxings between 24 and 33 pucks
1 star: maxings less than 24 pucks
Before the scout report was introduced there was another system where players would have a youth package. You'd have to see the very first training camp in the training report of a player to see which 3 skills were trained. If it contains checking, the player is relatively more likely to have higher maxings on the defensive skills.
There is a generation of players who have info from both youth camps before they were replaced with the scout report, which they also got.
