"Man Of The Match" (tm) sale

Badge image
It never even crossed my mind that a phrase so old, and so common, could be "owned".

But I obviously had my head buried in some sand. Because "OFS Group" somehow owns the phrase, since registering the trademark for it in 2002. And now they're selling it. And then whoever uses the phrase, presumably, will have to pay a fee to do so.

What. The. F.

Someone explain, please.

firstly, i cannot believe you cant remember me burying you in the sand, your head was clearly the only thing left visible as i danced away, havent you ever heard the term , back off johnny , that catchphrase is mine, it sounds like the phrase has been bought/patented for any future marketing purposes, i wonder if crew own any rights to the term managerzone, now i wanna know if they ever made any money from hiring out the MOM phrase, or did they sell a lame duck, or were they waiting for the right time to sell. maybe What The F is laying idly on the marketing shelf, lets go for it, what shall we call our marketing group, any ideas folks ?

maybe they were going to launch an on line soccer game or board game, or maybe a range of sportswear, or mens underwear, maybe they had weekly board meetings for the last ten years and failed to come up with a marketing plan, so sold up before the lease expired, we could launch a brand of jeans and polo shirts with, What The F, emblazoned on them, i am on the phone right now booking us a slot on Dragons Den..

Two derivative ideas occur:
(1) A site where chaps put up mugshots of themselves. Each day there is "Mug Of The Day" (MOTD) and other members have to trawl and pick the mugshot of someone else that looks most like that Mug. That's going to be called "Match Of The Man".
(2) A game where common phrases or sentences are written but any words within them that begin with the letter F are blanked. This, aha you guessed it, would be called "What The F?".

I've already trademarked, or whatever, these ideas. I'll consider swaps.

I think the guy that trademarked the "Keep Calm and Carry On" slogan is even worse, how can you trademark something somebody else created over 50 years ago?

I'm considering trademarking "No Added Sugar" and demand all diet sodas pay me for using my catch phrase on their products..... seems like a solid plan, right?

Well, call me a bastard but if we're going for this I'll take "Homes may be repossessed".

If anyone wants to use that as part of a sentence on an advert I'll take pleasure in bringing them to court if they refuse to pay. Maybe I'd give 50% of my royalties to "Shelter" and the "Salvation Army" just to be nice.
