Alessandro Del Piero joined Sydney FC in Australia.
Will he make any differences to the profile of football in Australia?

I heard Liverpool were also interested in him but i guess at this point in his career he wanted to earn one last fat cheque before he retires which is understandable. I think he will make a big difference to Sydney FC, i bet he still has some gas left in the tank. What a player!

He would have been a perfect fit at Sporting KC, though it seems like most of the big names end up in LA or New York.

Certainly, but it's impossible to predict how much. People wondered if soccer would become more popular in the United States when Beckham and Thierry Henry joined the MLS. It has, but there are a lot of other possible reasons, including the number of youths who have grown up playing the game the last few decades.

This is a terrible deal. Sydney FC to go bankrupt next season.

It's an interesting habit with these "twilight leagues", the MLS, China, Dubai, etc, that they prefer to bring in (faded) star players, that sort of attention-grabbing "glamour", rather than throwing the big money at the great coaches. If not the ability to attract guys at the peaks of their careers, still why not look at those guys who are getting too old for maybe the stress of frontline management in a big European league, or have some other issues, but might still be interested and have something to contribute. Quickly thinking of British managers; George Graham (fantastic record with Arsenal, very solid with Leeds and Spurs), Brian Little (great work with Leicester and, mostly, with Villa, tumbled into obscurity with short spells at progressively lower clubs), Paul Hart (did a great job with Nottingham Forest, since gone the way of Little), Roy Evans (excellent with Liverpool), Graham Taylor (at times a bit of a joke but obviously had something about him), Ron Atkinson (charismatic and talented motivator), Kevin Keegan (tactically suspect but great charisma and motivation, would certainly look to play attractive football), Joe Royle, Peter Taylor (currently with Bahrain...), Trevor Francis, Gerry Francis, Joe Kinnear...
Say, I got a bit carried away there. You get the idea. Beckham going to MLS got all sorts of attention, but I don't see where the general standard of American players, or indeed the league, increased. If you want to improve a league, you improve the players, above all, and if you want to improve the players, above all, you need better coaches.
I guess it'll be nice for fans of the various clubs to have the chance to watch a genuine world star, and he was playing regularly right up to the end of his time with Juventus, so his performances will likely still be good. And while it might well be he's on high money, this isn't a guy who needs the money. He's been a global star for almost two decades, right throughout the times when contracts have been in the tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands per week.

There are a couple of factors as to why the Australian league throws money at faded star players rather than coaches.
a) Presence of a salary cap - where one player is paid outside the cap
b) To draw more attention to the sport
You have to understand point b is massive. Soccer can't even compete against the other football codes here, the A-league season is played in summer not winter, so as not to clash. Sydney FC is considered a "big" soccer club here - average attendance of 11,861 last season.
As to why he chose to play here, in my mind it might be because the season here is much less taxing compared to other countries, so more "off" time might extend his career further. But who really knows for sure.
