In the 10th minute of the match Austria got a corner. Vietnam's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Michael-Jan Schönberg ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Austria's Michael-Jan Schönberg to fire away a dangerous shot which Hoàng Tran despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Robin Steckamp in the 11th minute of play forced Vietnam's goalkeeper Hoàng Tran to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hoàng Tran showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Robin Steckamp, who was totally free with the ball in the 12th minute. It was a well-played corner which Torben Krabber managed to volley towards the net. Unfortunately, he didn't get a great hit on the ball and it went out into the grandstand. Nguyễn Mai fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 31st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Arne Grabner having to interfere. In the 32nd match minute, Vietnam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Lê Thuyet to maneuver through the defense. After 36 played minutes Vietnam got a freekick which was hit by Dương Binh. An unexpectedly hard shot by Matthias Zahn in the 39th minute of play forced Vietnam's goalkeeper Hoàng Tran to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 39th match minute, Vietnam was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Dương Binh to maneuver through the defense. 42 minutes into the match, Vietnam's goal looked a bit too open when Robin Steckamp came free, but Hoàng Tran reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 46 minutes of play, Austria's Robin Steckamp made it 0-4 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Hoàng Tran was left in no man's land by his defense there! Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-4 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Nguyễn Mai was the one to do the kick off. In the 56th minute, Robin Steckamp reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Hoàng Tran. The goal made the score 0-5. Hoàng Tran showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Robin Steckamp, who was totally free with the ball in the 64th minute. Robin Steckamp who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 66thth minute tested the skills of Hoàng Tran when he managed to save the team from getting behind. After 67 minutes, Robin Steckamp made it 0-6 with a short kick to the right side. Vietnam's Hoàng Tran tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Vietnam's Hoàng Tran played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Michael-Jan Schönberg in the 72nd minute of play. Robin Steckamp recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 73rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 75th minute, Daniel Tschida ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Hoàng Tran was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-7. Austria's Hans-Hermann Spieler was substituted for Daniel Tschida. Austria's Matt Wegener was substituted for Benjamin Vollmaris. Through an outstanding action, after 80 minutes, Hoàng Tran successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. Arne Grabner showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Hoàng Phong in the 81st minute of the match. In the 87th minute, A.J. Schadenfroh hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 89 minutes into the match, Austria's Robin Steckamp sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Hoàng Tran narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The crowd rose to their feet as Austria's Hans-Hermann Spieler slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Hoàng Tran. That made the score 0-8 after 95 minutes of play. Austria played a much better game than Vietnam and deserved their victory. The Vietnam players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
