After 16 minutes U21 Netherlands's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Cai Otto who took care of the corner kick. The corner went over the outstretched arms of U21 Netherlands's goalie and right to Mário Lendaa. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. U21 Netherlands's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. In the 18th minute, Thomas Ommen ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Norberto Heerdt was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Norberto Heerdt made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Johannes Tollenaar in the 30th minute of play. U21 Netherlands's Humberto Maurits proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 32nd minute of the match, managed to save U21 Netherlands from getting a goal against them. Xandão Crouch could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 37th minute of the match, but Humberto Maurits made a huge save. 42 minutes had been played when some careless play by U21 Netherlands's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Cai Otto was slow to take the kick. During this time U21 Brazil's players had a chance to rest. After the first half U21 Netherlands were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

U21 Brazil made a substitution. Eriberto Lucas replaced André Piø. The wind increased when André Luís Zanette made the kick off in the second half. After a rather tough play, U21 Brazil's Eusébio Alvarenga got a free kick in the 70th minute. Norberto Heerdt made an important save on a dangerous shot by Rogier de Kort in the 73rd minute. In the 76th minute, U21 Netherlands's Johannes Tollenaar dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 0-3. An unexpectedly hard shot by Rogier de Kort in the 79th minute of play forced U21 Brazil's goalkeeper Norberto Heerdt to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some careless play in the U21 Brazil defense, Rogier de Kort kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Norberto Heerdt. The U21 Brazil fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Norberto Heerdt should have stopped the shot. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched U21 Netherlands eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
