When Denis Kolodin fell near the penalty area in the 30th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Russia's protests and gave Denis Kolodin a yellow card for diving instead. In the 30th minute, Denis Kolodin hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Humberto Maurits took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Dmitriy Cheryshev, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Afanasiy Malitikov made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Hette Reitsma in the 35th minute of play. A collision led to U21 Russia getting a freekick after 38 minutes play. Timofey Makogon hit a great ball. Hette Reitsma was extremely unlucky when he, in the 44th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Leonardo Da Vinci hit a great freekick 45 minutes into the match. The U21 Netherlands players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. U21 Russia were winning 0-1.

The wind increased when Daniil Kondratiev made the kick off in the second half. The supporters of U21 Netherlands booed when U21 Russia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 53 match minutes in a wonderful position. Dmitriy Cheryshev didn't get a good kick on the ball. Lev Pakhomov could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 56th minute of the match, but Humberto Maurits made a huge save. In the 80th minute the ball was on its way in behind U21 Russia's goalkeeper Afanasiy Malitikov, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The corner led U21 Netherlands's Alexander Driel to fire away a dangerous shot which Afanasiy Malitikov despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball.
