Joep Sligter made an important save on a dangerous shot by Frederico Hendrickx in the 17th minute. 20 minutes into the game, Frederico Hendrickx cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-0. Joep Sligter was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Charl De Vreese could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 22nd minute of the match, but Joep Sligter made a huge save. U21 Netherlands's Joep Sligter played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Elias Coveliers in the 30th minute of play. Sebbe Putman stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Big Diamond's shot from short distance in the 32nd minute. The corner led U21 Netherlands's Arie Schenkhuizen to fire away a dangerous shot which Sebbe Putman despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. A collision led to U21 Netherlands getting a freekick after 34 minutes play. Marcel Wijk hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Big Diamond in the 40th minute of play forced U21 Belgium's goalkeeper Sebbe Putman to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 42 minutes into the match, U21 Belgium's goal looked a bit too open when Jüri Djorkaeff came free, but Sebbe Putman reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Henk-Jan Weinands took the ball and in the 44 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Sebbe Putman. Sebbe Putman dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-2. After the first half U21 Netherlands were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Jüri Djorkaeff got free with Sebbe Putman in the 54th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Joep Sligter made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Elias Coveliers in the 55th minute of play. Joep Sligter took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Frederico Hendrickx, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Joep Sligter made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Frederico Hendrickx in the 82nd minute of play. Sebbe Putman didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Jüri Djorkaeff went, in the 86th minute, to the upper right corner, 2-4 was the resulting score. After 92 minutes of play, U21 Belgium's Elias Coveliers made it 3-4 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Joep Sligter was left in no man's land by his defense there! Herve Oyen kicked well hit freekick during the 95th minute of the match. Marcel Wijk kicked well hit freekick during the 97th minute of the match. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched U21 Netherlands eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
