Games Console advice please.

Badge image
My kids have a Nintendo wii and a while back they got fifa11 on it. It's a great game but already they are asking if they can have fifa12 for xmas.

I have had a look at the gameplay (using youtube) of fifa 12 on alternative consoles...i.e. xbox and playstation3 and have to say these two look vastly superior graphically.

Can some of you gamers out there please advise as to what console is the best and why. Is the wii inferior to the other 2 ?

Thanks.

The main thing graphically is the Wii doesn't do HD. The 360 and PS3 both do and it's a significant upgrade. The Wii is definitely more about the gameplay and innovative control, a party the PS3 (Move) and 360 (Kinect) were much later to.

As for the better of 360 and PS3, it depends what you'll (oh uh I mean they'll) use it for. You'll pay more for a PS3 because it has a built-in Blu-Ray player. They each have some exclusive games and exclusive "extra content" for games, although most appear on both with minimal differences. The other big thing is the PS3 is free to play online (assuming you already have a broadband connection), whereas 360 is pay for competitive online play (you can download demos and game content and bits for free).

Reliability is about even, the original 360 had a famous "Red Lights of Death" overheating problem which killed quite a few but the more recent 360 Slim, which also looks flasher, seems to have overcome this. PS3 has the less-publicized (and seemingly less common) "Yellow Light of Death" issue, but this too may have been resolved by now.

Personally, I went with the 360 Slim since I didn't really want to play online, no interest in Blu Ray, it was cheaper and I significantly prefer the 360's pad design.

Oh saying about the HD, bear in mind if the kids will be using a TV that isn't HD-ready, doesn't have the hdmi connection, the 360 and PS3 graphics won't look all that better than the Wii, if at all.

Yay apparently i'm HARDCORE!!!

PS3's the most advanced of the three, though the Xbox 360 has everything the PS3 has bar Blu-Ray and extra hard disk space. A lot of titles these days are multi-platform so you're not missing out on too much whichever one you take. I can say though that the Playstation Network, despite being hacked once, is pretty damn sweet. Wii is more the budget console that has a lot of good exclusives but also misses out on a lot of big titles because of inferior hardware.

There's rumours of next generation consoles though and the Wii U is confirmed so beware that if you do buy another console it may become obsolete a lot quicker than you would've hoped. Don't worry though as Sony and Microsoft also claim their current consoles have a lot of life left in them.

Thanks guys great answers......another question...

Am I right in thinking the wii does not have a hard drive for storing films etc whilst the xbox and ps3 do ?

Technically. It has 512mb flash memory rather than any sort of hard drive, BUT it has SD card support, and now more advanced SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card support. These are finger-nail size little things that are now the standard for adding storage capacity to anything digital, from mobiles to cameras to camcorders to some digital TV recorders. The SD limit was 2GB, the SDHC is 32GB. Plenty of storage space and you can have as many cards as you want (although not all plugged in at once of course). Effectively, an external hard drive, basically. PS3 and 360 indeed both have internal hard drives as standard these days. For just games and demos on my 360 I've found the 4GB plenty.

Bear in mind of course since the Wii isn't HD, you wouldn't be able to watch HD-quality films through it.

(The next-generation Wii that OTT3 mentioned will be HD, by the by.)

Great stuff kj. Top answers as ever.;)

I'm inclined to wait until the next generation wii is out. Just have to persuade the kids now;). I've read a lot of reviews of fifa 12 and tbh don't think there is that much difference to fifa 11.

My main gripe of fifa 11 is that it has no....world cup, euro champs or champs league (unless I've missed something). The old fifa games allowed you to create a custom cup. Can't find that for love nor money on fifa 11.....also no editing of kits either ;(.

We usually download and watch our films via usb which is great. But no real storage facility other than the PC. Are there any details or timescale for the next wii ?

yeah..., fifa 12 has champions league, it's called champions cup in the game, and that's the only problem with fifa 12, no world cup and none of the continental stuff, they have an international round, but it's just friendlies, i hope they add those tournaments in fifa 13
