Any tactic expert available?

Badge image
Hi all, I need someones help in order to change my actual tactics settings. I dont have a club on how to place my players on the ice, so if someone could help me with this issue would be great. Thanks in advance to anyone that can show some kind of guide on this matter.

Haha welcome to the club.

I don't think there are many that are tactically aware in hockey lol

Important Skills by Position:

Keeper: Keeping, Stamina, Player Intel, Quickness

Defence: Power, Checking, Stamina, Quickness, Skating

Wings: Power, Shooting, Stamina, Quickness, Skating

Center: Basically Everything - Put your most well balanced and highest value players here.
Power, Shooting, Stamina, Quickness, Skating, Puck Control (for face-offs), Checking

Unless there is a real drop off in talent, use your highest Stamina players on your top lines. General rule of thumb on minutes played is:
Line 1: 21 min
Line 2: 18 min
Line 3: 13 min
Line 4: 8 min

How about Tactics Role:

Positioning the players on the ice for the 3 positions, plus mentality and pressing styles.

I know, I know...that's for me to figure-out.

If anyone is interested we could change e-mails or even skype to chat about this point!!

i generally just play the basic tactics. whenever I set my tactics to attacking I let in a crazy amount of goals even though my top line forwards are solid defensively(at least against good teams). using a pressing squad can generate a lot of offensive zone turnovers which are handy put you also run the risk of taking penalties.

Yeah, I would leave my Mentality as Normal and Pressing as Balanced and then use the skill listing I posted as the 4th post on this thread to figure out where to put your players.

Use the hint above to see what skills are needed for each position. The faster defender is than he can play high, if he is slow with lack of stamina then try to place him near the keeper.

Here you have an article about tactics created by Polish top players, which was translated by me. Enjoy the reading !

That was a great article with lots of interesting opinions. I have never really moved my players around in their boxes before so I definitely have some tinkering to do this offseason.

The one thing that really made me laugh though, is that nobody in that article seemed to agree on anything. Most people wrote that the center with the good checking should play around or below the blue line to help the defenders but then somebody says that he should play forward because he's capable of coming back to check. Similarly, some people think that the slower defender should play forward so that he can try to reach the oppositions forwards faster and stop the attack, while other say that he should play closer to the goal because he lacks the speed to make up for any errors (ie - give away less breakaways). And then faster wingers should play back because you don't want them to jump offside while other people think that slower wingers should play back to make sure they are involved both offensively and defensively.

Lots of things to test. Thanks for the article. Any ideas who the best managers in that article are off hand. Basically, whose tactics should I test first or whose ideas carry the most weight?

Haha Agree with you, almost all of them have different ideas. Really hard to say which tactic is best from that article. I can agree with the opinion that when defender is slow, it's better for him to play close to the keeper, I think it's quite obvious, when defender is slow and we set him high on the ice rink, then much faster winger can overtake him, and the slow defender has no chance ro catch the winger again. So if he set him near the keeper, than he has some chance to fight for the puck.

About the center it's hard to say, some managers put the center high in the attack even above the wingers, some far below the blue line, it's good to test all options.

I'd say it's good to try this one, when the wingers are in the one line with center, I notice when watching 3D that the attack cooperate well in this position, they attacking together in one line, and the defenders of the opponent have loads of troubles.

oh dear. i just got hammered 8-2 (outshot 24-6) after adjusting my tactics. i played the same team yesterday and only lost 2-0 (outshot 16-12).

obviously i need a bigger sample size but we're not off to a great start here.

In my experience the time that puts wings and center ahead of the blue line were losing the puck easily..
