Possible candidates for a renaming of the A-League MVP award

Badge image
After a query from Toss over why the award is called the Waterland. I've decided to open this question up to all managers who have owned past Australian National Team players of skills so exceptional, that they deserve the most prestigious individual honour in Australian Managerzone Football to carry their name.

Toss suggested Brian Beattie due to the amount of titles (7 or 8) he won before retiring

Who else has any suggestion?

When I was the National Coach there was one guy from Glasston who absolutely blew my mind, Cullen Rowden. Skill-wise he is probably the best Autralian player that I have seen. Since he has retired now I think rookerman won't mind me sharing his stats, going from memory he was something like this:

http://mzplayer.se/?id=0226085387

Would have been nice if he had an extra ball or two in tackling but all around, he was a midfield MACHINE! He played his whole career with Glasston, and I assume won all the titles that Glasston has won (six I think). Beattie has an awesome case with all those trophies too; I think they would both be suitable choices to name the medal after.

OH and I should add Rowden probably won all the National Cups that Glasston won as well (unsure how many but it is a lot)

Yeah, Glasston had 2 players I thought of - Rowdon and Jessop Howard.

I think Rowdon was 15, 16 and 18 when Glasston won 3 of his 5. And 17 when he won a Nat Cup and Champions Cup.

I remember Jessop Howard being very good but I can't remember what his stats were like; he didn't make the same impression on me that Rowden did.

I didn't work out how long ago Glasstons titles were and how old Rowden was, I just assumed he's old and he's awesome, he must have been there. I don't think it's a coincidence that the same season he joined the club Glasston started winning everything. They haven't won anything since he left either. He's just a born winner ;)

Grinner has written a spirited defence of his player Munroe Waterland in the message board thread this stemmed from. But the candidacy of Cullen Rowden and Brian Beattie are also valid claims.

Could those who know the player stats of Beattie and Waterland kindly post them in a skiller for comparison to Rowden. Even Jessop Howard if someone who knows what they are would be so kind

The great Jessop Howard, There was a story i did in an episode of the zone around the time he retired , dont know if that is still available

Here is his stats

Do you know how long ago that was? If it was long enough ago it would still be in the archive, but not while it's been on external sites

Grinner's defense of Munroe Waterland reposted, as it deserve wider recognition

Waterland was one of the greatest players in MZ History, as he single handedly drove the Duffield Utd team to their final title, thus robbing tosspot of yet another piece of tin, he followed it up by moving to Woodbury to again deny tosspot more trinkets, therefore he is a perfect representative of the Australian spirit when confronted with what seems like insurmountable odds such as the AD fascist dogma. He is a symbol, a shining beacon of hope to the masses, to believe, to dare to dream, to know that our efforts arent in vain and that the savage reign of tosspot can be ended if you just persevere. There has never been a player to ever embody the ANZAC spirit quite like the great Munroe Waterland.

Also it annoys tosspot & if thats not a reason to keep it then im a dutchman. :)

It's hard to argue with that... plus Beattie is in fact the equal of Rowden now that I see them side-by-side again. I think they all make fine choices, so maybe we should just pick which ever one makes the coolest sounding award?

Re: Possible candidates for a renaming of the A-League MVP award

My ideas so far after a synonym, dictionary check for adjectives of an award. Also seeing as we have some fine candidates, I'll rename 3 awards (the MVP, goal scorer and team championship).

I'm throwing in Bickford Bundy, into the mix as well.

The MVP choices

The Rowden Medal (it has an official ring to it, if not adjectively superlative)
The Bestowal of Brian (for all those Monty Python fan out there) or just simply Beattie's Bestowal
Or
Retaining the current name The Waterland (imagine a Tritons scepter as the award instead of a medallion)

The top scorer

Bundy's Boot (simple yet effective)
The Waterland (since he is also a striker)
Jessop's Jewel (could be a ring of some sort)

Team championship

The Waterland (In honour of grinner's defense as a symbol of the underdog battler), if none of the above then this, as it a good name for an award.

Anyway that is what I can come up with, who else has any ideas?

The only other name i can put forward is the late, and not so great by todays standards, Ivan Hogan. It was his goals that steered Australia to their highest ever World Cup finish, and in particular a hattrick he bagged in the Quarter Final.

Again he is a player who succeeded against the odds with him not getting a shirt in the previous managers regime, and scraping into the squad for the WC hge was not expected to ever see pitch time. Due to formation circumstances and a red card to dished out in the first group game he was drafted into the team, and made an immediate impression only failing to score in 1 game (the semi final). Armed with a mighty 7 speed and 8 Shooting he managed to take the MZ world by storm and made the entire globe sit up and take notice of our little country.

Im starting to think i should be writing wiki pages. ok people 15 PT per wiki page for your player, roll up roll up....

This biggest problem with Hogan is the fact it wont annoy tosspot half as much as Waterland does, and this is an essential component to how our league and community work, we cannot let this prestigious award come under the spell of tossbag and his AD machinations. Dont fall in line, revolt!!!

The Rowden Medal, Bundy's Boot and The Waterland all have a ring to them.

Can I suggest running it as a poll in the zone to choose the names of the award? Similar to here, a brief description of the names to choose from, and the polls to select underneath. Hopefully enough people would vote to give it some validity.

The issue with Bundy is his record in the A-league wasn't really outstanding. I mean he spent most of his time there with me, battling relegation. Arguably he was the single reason I even got there in the first place though (Only player I ever had good enough to play in an senior NT cup game, I may have had 6 speed players and U21 guys running around on the pitch at various points during my A-league tenure too).
Season 40 - 9th
Season 42 - 7th
Season 43 - 8th
Season 44 - 8th
Season 45 - 1st (With Duffield United)
Bundy's (and my own entirely co-incidentally) record was much better in div 1 (In five "serious" seasons there finished top 3 on four occasions).

Unfortunately none of the guys I played "against the odds" have had great careers, the most notable (so far) are Dagan See (A couple of U21 NT games, borderline senior NT player made the last squad) and Herman Cameron (Borderline NT player hasn't made a squad yet). Both of those guys would've been...20 ? when they first played A-league games. James "Daytona" Salcedo probably holds the record for most appearances by a 6 speed player thinking about it, would've played in just about all my A-league games.

I feel I've gone off-topic trying to create a "most unlikely A-league player" or "worst player in A-league" award...

Bundy was a main stay of the national team though, either as the main striker or supporting striker. As like Waterland he was intelligent and could pass and shoot equally well.

He was dropped long before retirement from the starting squad/bench. He may not even be retired yet. His stats were good early, but others caught up and overtook easily.

He's was never as good as Ronaldinho, but his NT career is similar.

Dunno about long before retirement, the only senior team cup campaign he didn't feature heavily in (Since he was initially picked) was the last confed cup campaign, even then I think he still played in one of the games. Has retired now, finished with 3rd most goals in cup games by an NT player.

Re: Possible candidates for a renaming of the A-League MVP award

I'm surprised that Murdock Rizzardo hasn't been mentioned as often. He was a big train for our successful Senior NT campaign which brought home Australia's first trophy.

Maybe there can still be runner up and 3rd placed medals/trophies for naming rights, much like a club b&f.

Re: Possible candidates for a renaming of the A-League MVP award

Badge image
He hasn't retired though, and while the goalkeeping award is named after a current player in Cuddihy. I thought for the rest we should honour some of the past greats, that had perhaps been forgotten yet deserve recognition.

Club B&F could be an option, if a manager wanted theirs to have a name then they could choose one for themselves from the stock of player they have had pass through their club and who they feel most deserving.

Should there be a select criteria, and perhaps a hall of fame then?

I'd love to see this summarised up for the next edition of The Zone though. Would be the best feature topic we've had in ages.
