U21 World Cup 2018: groups drawn!

23-08-2018 10:00

The U21 World Cup 2018 begins on August 28 and yesterday the groups were drawn. Reigning U21 World Cup champions Greece were drawn in Group 2 along with England, Latvia and Cyprus, while last year's finalists Brazil were drawn in Group 6 along with Uruguay, Romania and Argentina.

To ensure active engagement in all National Team cups, only countries with an elected National Coach are invited to participate in each cup. Total teams were 79 in the U21 World Cup qualification.

Once again, the qualification phase resulted in several of the big nations being eliminated.
  • The finalists from 2008, Ecuador, failed to qualify, after finishing 4th in their group behind United States, Cyprus and Costa Rica.

  • The silver medalists from 2015, Mexico, missed out on the World Cup party despite collecting 7 points in their group, as they ended up with same goal difference as Lithuania, but with less goals scored. Talk about tiny marginals!

  • Three-folded European Championship finalists Denmark ended 4th in their qualification group and therefore have to wait another couple of months for a chance to win their first ever national team cup trophy.

All teams who failed to qualify for the U21 World Cup party: Netherlands, Croatia, Singapore, Chile, Panama, Macedonia, Switzerland, Albania, Tunisia, Belarus, Ireland, Sengal, Slovakia, Peru, Scotland, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Serbia, Bulgaria, Philippines, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Honduras, Estonia, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Lebanon, Iceland, Indonesia, Bosnia And Hercegovina, United Arab Emirates, Andorra, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Colombia, Luxembourg, Trinidad & Tobago, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Canada .
