Pentti Siltavirta started the match with the kick off. Pentti Siltavirta blasted a shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ásgautur Reimarsson having to make a save. 13 minutes in the game Ísidór Jónsson did a throw-in, and the ball was quickly in game thanks to Þyrnir Árnason. Ásgautur Reimarsson made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Pentti Siltavirta in the 16th minute of play. In the 17th minute, Pentti Siltavirta made a precise shot to the right of Ásgautur Reimarsson. Iceland's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. 20 minutes into the game, Ísidór Jónsson threw the ball into play from the sideline. Finland's Kustavi Jansson quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Finland's attentive Kustavi Tuominen managed to snatch the ball when Adólf Hálfdánsson made a throw-in in the 23rd minute of the game. After having played for 24 minutes, Pentti Siltavirta managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Finland's supporters crossed their fingers, but Pentti Siltavirta was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Touko Kauppila showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Þyrnir Árnason in the 36th minute of the match. Iceland's Héðinn Erlendsson got a good chance for a goal in the 40th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. In the 47th match minute, Finland was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gucci Marshall to maneuver through the defense. In the 49th minute, Gucci Marshall hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After having played for 49 minutes, Þyrnir Árnason managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Iceland's supporters crossed their fingers, but Þyrnir Árnason was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Garibaldi Hlöðversson to make the kick off. A collision led to Iceland getting a freekick after 56 minutes play. Ísidór Jónsson hit a great ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Pentti Siltavirta in the 57th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Ásgautur Reimarsson saved Iceland from getting behind. Pentti Siltavirta blasted a shot towards the goal in the 62nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ásgautur Reimarsson having to make a save. After a rather tough play, Finland's Pentti Siltavirta got a free kick in the 66th minute. After 67 played minutes, Iceland's Gylfi Halldórsson shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Touko Kauppila came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Iceland reached it. Pentti Siltavirta blasted a shot towards the goal in the 71st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ásgautur Reimarsson having to make a save. The audience thought a goal was coming when Pentti Siltavirta got free with Ásgautur Reimarsson in the 73rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 76th minute, Pentti Siltavirta got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Iceland made a substitution. Reifnir Hjörvarsson replaced Þyrnir Árnason. Finland made a substitution. Petri Kinnaslampi replaced Pentti Siltavirta. Ásgautur Reimarsson made an important save on a dangerous shot by Petri Kinnaslampi in the 79th minute. Finland's Touko Kauppila played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Reifnir Hjörvarsson in the 82nd minute of play. Ásgautur Reimarsson showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Petri Kinnaslampi in the 83rd minute of the match. When Iceland's Garibaldi Hlöðversson in the 84th minute got a chance for a shot 84th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Finland's goalie prevented a goal. In the 88th match minute, Iceland was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Adólf Hálfdánsson to maneuver through the defense. Aðalberg Pálmason charged in rather forcefully in the 91st minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Aðalberg Pálmason the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Tommi Kautonen shot the penalty kick by force right in the crossbar. No goal. After 96 played minutes Finland got a freekick which was hit by Petri Kinnaslampi. Touko Kauppila made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Reifnir Hjörvarsson in the 101st minute of play. The Finland supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Finland would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
