With a couple of smart ball manuevers Silviu Dascălu in the 11th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sigurvin Gretarsson saved Iceland from getting behind. Răzvan Pârvuță scored 0-1 in the 13th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Sigurvin Gretarsson, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 16th minute Silviu Dascălu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sigurvin Gretarsson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Sigurvin Gretarsson showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Răzvan Pârvuță in the 22nd minute of the match. Liviu Caramitru might have been able to make a better finish in the 25th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Sigurvin Gretarsson. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Liviu Caramitru ran back to his position shaking his head. An unexpectedly hard shot by Björgólfur Rúnarsson in the 26th minute of play forced Romania's goalkeeper Daniel Mușătescu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 30 minutes into the match, Iceland's goal looked a bit too open when Silviu Dascălu came free, but Sigurvin Gretarsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Sigurvin Gretarsson showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Răzvan Pârvuță, who was totally free with the ball in the 36th minute. Daniel Mușătescu made a fantastic save in the 38th minute, when Hjálmar Barðason sent off a good shot on target. Reifnir Hjörvarsson hit a great freekick 41 minutes into the match. After 44 played minutes Romania got a freekick which was hit by Ionică Cernat. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Iceland's Sigurvin Gretarsson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Horea Niță in the 51st minute of play. In the 53rd minute, Hjálmar Barðason got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 56 minutes into the match, Iceland's goalkeeper Sigurvin Gretarsson had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Augustin Amurăriței. Sigurvin Gretarsson showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Augustin Amurăriței in the 59th minute of the match. If Hjálmar Barðason had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 69th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Romania's Nae Turbatu was substituted for Silviu Dascălu. A collision led to Romania getting a freekick after 77 minutes play. Nae Turbatu hit a great ball. After 86 minutes, Marcel Geolgău made it 0-2 with a short kick to the right side. Iceland's Sigurvin Gretarsson tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. After a defensive mix-up in Iceland's zone, Marcel Geolgău stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Sigurvin Gretarsson came out of the goal and Marcel Geolgău tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 89th minute Marcel Geolgău shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sigurvin Gretarsson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Romania's Matthías De Ligt quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Höður Júlíansson, made in the 94th minute of the game.
