The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. With a little luck, Hungary's Richárd Simon got control of the ball when Hans Heuvel tried to sneak it across the goal line. Richárd Simon was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Hans Heuvel showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 5 minute of play. 9 minutes into the match, Hungary's goalkeeper Richárd Simon had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Hans Heuvel. Netherlands's Godfried Buskes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tamás Nagy in the 27th minute of play. In the 28th minute of the match, Danny de Jaeger got a very nice opportunity to score, but Richárd Simon was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. In the 28th minute, Danny de Jaeger reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Richárd Simon. The goal made the score 2-0. If José Ramsey had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 39th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Godfried Buskes made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Bertalan Hegedűs in the 41st minute of play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Cesare Maldini during the 44th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 44 played minutes Hungary got a freekick which was hit by Cesare Maldini. With a little luck, Hungary's Richárd Simon got control of the ball when Danny de Jaeger tried to sneak it across the goal line. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

After a defensive mix-up in Hungary's zone, Vũ Ur stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Richárd Simon came out of the goal and Vũ Ur tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Hungary made a substitution. Dávid Sebes replaced Márton Jászberényi. Norbert Török's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Godfried Buskes firmly grabbed it by the left post. In the 89th minute Hans Heuvel shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Richárd Simon saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Godfried Buskes made a fantastic save in the 91st minute, when Norbert Török sent off a good shot on target. Netherlands's Godfried Buskes played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bertalan Hegedűs in the 96th minute of play.
