The field was rather wet after several days of rain when Arty Clist took the kick off in the first half of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Wolfgang-Bernd Zach in the 2nd minute of play forced U21 Australia's goalkeeper Larry Waller to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Lance Szobczak fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Tobias Pollakowski having to interfere. Larry Waller took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jan-Hauke Ivanschitz, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some careless play in the U21 Austria defense, Arty Clist kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Tobias Pollakowski. The U21 Austria fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Tobias Pollakowski should have stopped the shot. Larry Waller made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jan-Benedikt Kaiser in the 13th minute of play. The supporters of U21 Austria booed when U21 Australia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Blake Sawbridge didn't get a good kick on the ball. A collision led to U21 Australia getting a freekick after 20 minutes play. Ethan Spurr hit a great ball.
