The corner led Spain's Pacorro Reina to fire away a dangerous shot which Américo Fontes despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The audience was convinced that Afonso Magalhães's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Playo Bermejo was relentless in the 16th minute of the game. In the 18th minute Portugal were awarded a corner. Augusto Bessa went to the cornerflag to take it. In the 23rd minute, Afonso Magalhães made a precise shot to the right of Playo Bermejo. Spain's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-1. Spain's Playo Bermejo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Afonso Magalhães in the 25th minute of play. Playo Bermejo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Afonso Magalhães in the 32nd minute of play. A collision led to Spain getting a freekick after 33 minutes play. Serapio Orbiz hit a great ball. 38 minutes into the match, Portugal's goal looked a bit too open when Xove Herrera came free, but Américo Fontes reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Playo Bermejo showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Afonso Magalhães in the 40th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Paulo Tavares in the 44th minute of play forced Spain's goalkeeper Playo Bermejo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 45th match minute, Spain was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Xove Herrera to maneuver through the defense. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Ricardo Valente received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 86th minute. Playo Bermejo tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 94 minutes into the match, Spain's Xove Herrera sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Américo Fontes narrowly saved just below the crossbar. In the 94th minute, Xove Herrera made a precise shot to the right of Américo Fontes. Portugal's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 2-4. Portugal played a much better game than Spain and deserved their victory. The Spain players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
