Benjamín Costas kicked well hit freekick during the 3rd minute of the match. Cesar Batres acted impressively in front of the goal and made a superb save when he, in the 4th minute, took the ball on the long shot from Malvin Austria. Romeo Pontones sent away a hard shot on goal in the 11th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Cesar Batres made a fantastic save in the 11th minute, when Romeo Pontones sent off a good shot on target. Romeo Pontones blasted a shot towards the goal in the 15th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Cesar Batres having to make a save. Through an outstanding action, after 15 minutes, Cesar Batres successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. 16 minutes into the match, Romeo Pontones had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Cesar Batres. Guatemala's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Romeo Pontones was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 1-0. An unexpectedly hard shot by Romeo Pontones in the 20th minute of play forced Guatemala's goalkeeper Cesar Batres to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Oroitz Cortazar recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 21st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Cesar Batres made a fantastic save in the 24th minute, when Romeo Pontones sent off a good shot on target. In the 26th minute Romeo Pontones shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cesar Batres saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Cesar Batres came out of the goal in the 29th minute to try and stop a shot by Uruguay's Romeo Pontones. But to his dismay, Romeo Pontones quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-0. Panfilo Tremiño took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Misael Cerna, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 39 minutes into the match, Guatemala's goal looked a bit too open when Romeo Pontones came free, but Cesar Batres reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Romeo Pontones blasted a shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Cesar Batres having to make a save. An unexpectedly hard shot by Romeo Pontones in the 41st minute of play forced Guatemala's goalkeeper Cesar Batres to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 43rd minute, Oroitz Cortazar managed to get in a good position for a shot. Uruguay's supporters rose to their feet, but Oroitz Cortazar was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Cesar Batres breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The audience thought a goal was coming when Romeo Pontones got free with Cesar Batres in the 46th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Af the end of the first half the score was 3-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.
If Romeo Pontones had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Cesar Batres made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Romeo Pontones in the 57th minute of play. The audience was convinced that Romeo Pontones's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Cesar Batres was relentless in the 58th minute of the game. Guatemala's Cesar Batres played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Romeo Pontones in the 61st minute of play. Cesar Batres made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Oroitz Cortazar in the 62nd minute of play. Oroitz Cortazar sent away a hard shot on goal in the 63rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Guatemala's Hugo Padilla was substituted for Oscar Rey. Guatemala made a substitution. Antonio Orobio replaced Benjamín Costas. Cesar Batres stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Romeo Pontones's shot from short distance in the 70th minute. A collision led to Guatemala getting a freekick after 72 minutes play. Patricio Umanzor hit a great ball. Uruguay made a substitution. Alejandro Cueva replaced Romeo Pontones. 78 minutes into the match, Alejandro Cueva had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Cesar Batres. In the 90th minute Meder Ubiña shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cesar Batres saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Cesar Batres didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Meder Ubiña went, in the 90th minute, to the upper right corner, 5-0 was the resulting score. The referee blew his whistle, and the match came to a close. The players exchanged shirts and headed down the tunnel. The Uruguay fans cheered their team off the field, for while Guatemala had put up a good fight, they were unable to come out of the game with any points to show for their effort.
