The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Basarab Coșeriu took the ball and in the 5 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Vadim Izãreanu. Vadim Izãreanu dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. U21 Romania's Emil Aldulea proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 9th minute of the match, managed to save U21 Romania from getting a goal against them. Vadim Izãreanu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mihail Pipirig, who was totally free with the ball in the 10th minute. Vadim Izãreanu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Mihail Pipirig in the 11th minute of play. In the 13th minute Mihail Pipirig shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Vadim Izãreanu saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 15 minutes into the match, Mihail Pipirig notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of U21 Moldova's Vadim Izãreanu. Vadim Izãreanu was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Lilian Covali received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Emil Aldulea came out and tried to block the shot, but Lilian Covali slotted it home off the left post making it 1-2 in the 21st minute. 23 minutes into the match, U21 Moldova's goal looked a bit too open when Mihail Pipirig came free, but Vadim Izãreanu reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Vadim Izãreanu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Mihail Pipirig, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Emil Aldulea showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Filip Cornea, who was totally free with the ball in the 30th minute. Ionică Melinescu blasted a shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Vadim Izãreanu having to make a save. 35 minutes into the match, U21 Romania's goal looked a bit too open when Filip Cornea came free, but Emil Aldulea reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Vadim Izãreanu stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ernest Nedelcu's shot from short distance in the 37th minute. A collision led to U21 Romania getting a freekick after 40 minutes play. Cristinel Vârlan hit a great ball. In the 41stth minute of the game Pavel Iovu who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but U21 Romania's Emil Aldulea was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. When Ghitã Dumitras fell near the penalty area in the 42nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Moldova's protests and gave Ghitã Dumitras a yellow card for diving instead. U21 Romania's Emil Aldulea proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 46th minute of the match, managed to save U21 Romania from getting a goal against them. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Pavel Iovu to make the kick off. In the 53rd minute, Pavel Iovu ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Emil Aldulea was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-2. Alex Ander replaced Ionică Melinescu. 63 minutes into the game, one of U21 Moldova:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. The audience thought a goal was coming when Mihail Pipirig got free with Vadim Izãreanu in the 68th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. U21 Moldova's Vadim Izãreanu proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 72nd minute of the match, managed to save U21 Moldova from getting a goal against them. U21 Moldova's Vadim Izãreanu played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sebastian Andreescu in the 74th minute of play. Lilian Covali sent away a hard shot on goal in the 78th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Ernest Nedelcu's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Vadim Izãreanu read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 80th minute of play. U21 Moldova's Ruslan Cociu was substituted for Lilian Covali. U21 Romania's Ernest Nedelcu got a good chance for a goal in the 87th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of U21 Romania booed when U21 Moldova was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 90 match minutes in a wonderful position. Vasile Jereghi didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Ernest Nedelcu came up free with the goalie in the 91st minute, the U21 Romania fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ernest Nedelcu couldn't finish the play. Vadim Izãreanu showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ernest Nedelcu, who was totally free with the ball in the 92nd minute.
