After a rather tough play, Frankfurt's Boris Richstein got a free kick in the 12th minute. In the 14th minute Juan-Carlos Cervantes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gero Beinlich saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 14th minute, Harald Beutel hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Bayer Leverkusen's Jens Burmeister got a good chance for a goal in the 15th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. With a little luck, Frankfurt's Gero Beinlich got control of the ball when Jens Burmeister tried to sneak it across the goal line. Juan-Carlos Cervantes was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 20th minute. Bayer Leverkusen's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. Jiří Jindrák took the ball and in the 21 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Gero Beinlich. Gero Beinlich dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 3-0. Jens Burmeister struck a weak shot in the 26th minute. Gero Beinlich didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Bayer Leverkusen. Figen Driesen charged in rather forcefully in the 27th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. In the 28th minute, Bayer Leverkusen's Juan-Carlos Cervantes ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Gero Beinlich. Gero Beinlich yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 4-0. In the 34th minute Juan-Carlos Cervantes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gero Beinlich saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 37th match minute, Frankfurt was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Hergen Kelber to maneuver through the defense. After some fancy dribbling in the 39th minute, Juan-Carlos Cervantes managed to get in a good position for a shot. Bayer Leverkusen's supporters rose to their feet, but Juan-Carlos Cervantes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Gero Beinlich breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Bayer Leverkusen's Jiří Jindrák got a good chance for a goal in the 46th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar.
The wind increased when Maiko Koewius made the kick off in the second half. When Costa Ravens fell near the penalty area in the 51st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Frankfurt's protests and gave Costa Ravens a yellow card for diving instead. Costa Ravens hit a great freekick 51 minutes into the match. Frankfurt's Gero Beinlich played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Hank Schrader in the 54th minute of play. In the 56th minute Mathias Sobbe shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gero Beinlich saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Juan-Carlos Cervantes charged in rather forcefully in the 56th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. In the 91st minute, Jens Burmeister got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 96 minutes into the match, Frankfurt's goal looked a bit too open when Jens Burmeister came free, but Gero Beinlich reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When the referee ended the match the Bayer Leverkusen players were able to celebrate. They had won a fair victory and recieved the ovations of their fans.
