Spectators: 150 (Terracing: 113, Seating: 34, VIP seats: 3) Sporting de Gijón's Matias Bilintx started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. In the 3rd minute Boleslaw Zielinski shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dante Fernendo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Dante Fernendo stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Boleslaw Zielinski's shot from short distance in the 8th minute. 10 minutes into the match, Lyons's goal looked a bit too open when Matias Bilintx came free, but Luisito Quinten reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Luisito Quinten showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Eustacio Loiola, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. Dante Fernendo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Boleslaw Zielinski in the 18th minute of play. After some careless play in the Sporting de Gijón defense, Boleslaw Zielinski kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Dante Fernendo. The Sporting de Gijón fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Dante Fernendo should have stopped the shot. Luisito Quinten showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Saturnino Curcio in the 22nd minute of the match. The corner led to Sporting de Gijón's Ademar Rocha getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. After some fancy dribbling in the 27th minute, Boleslaw Zielinski managed to get in a good position for a shot. Lyons's supporters rose to their feet, but Boleslaw Zielinski was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Dante Fernendo breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. When Lyons's Boleslaw Zielinski in the 29th minute got a chance for a shot 29th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. In the 35thth minute of the game Boleslaw Zielinski who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Sporting de Gijón's Dante Fernendo was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Dante Fernendo stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Boleslaw Zielinski's shot from short distance in the 35th minute. Matias Bilintx could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 38th minute of the match, but Luisito Quinten made a huge save. Sporting de Gijón's Dante Fernendo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Boleslaw Zielinski in the 40th minute of play. After 41 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Esteban Ekaitz. After having played for 41 minutes, Boleslaw Zielinski managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Lyons's supporters crossed their fingers, but Boleslaw Zielinski was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Lyons's zone, Matias Bilintx stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Luisito Quinten came out of the goal and Matias Bilintx tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. If Boleslaw Zielinski had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 46th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Lyons made a substitution. Cesar Remigio replaced Boleslaw Zielinski. After the first half Lyons were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

When the match clock showed 56 minutes, the score became 1-2 when Saturnino Curcio sped through Lyons's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Luisito Quinten. Paulo Illan blasted a shot towards the goal in the 58th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Dante Fernendo having to make a save. Sporting de Gijón's Rune Fanström was substituted for Volli Püss. In a very dangerous position, a player in Lyons fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 61st minute. Penalty! Luisito Quinten showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Matias Bilintx in the 66th minute of the match. Dante Fernendo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Lyons. Sporting de Gijón's Alejandro Rufo was substituted for Saturnino Curcio. Marcos Berasko was slow to take the kick. During this time Lyons's players had a chance to rest. An unexpectedly hard shot by Ademar Rocha in the 89th minute of play forced Lyons's goalkeeper Luisito Quinten to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Dariusz Roano got free with Dante Fernendo in the 91st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Luisito Quinten showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Alejandro Rufo, who was totally free with the ball in the 98th minute. After 100 played minutes, Sporting de Gijón's Eustacio Loiola shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Luisito Quinten came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Sporting de Gijón reached it.
