Dorio Laje came out of the goal and Iván Sotomayor tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. If Iván Sotomayor had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 31st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Melquiades Amor showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Renato Nunez-Tesheira in the 37th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lucio Oquendo got free with Melquiades Amor in the 41st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Iván Sotomayor came up free with the goalie in the 47th minute, the U21 Peru fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Iván Sotomayor couldn't finish the play. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The wind increased when Renato Nunez-Tesheira made the kick off in the second half. After a rather tough play, U21 Peru's Artaldo Longoria got a free kick in the 52nd minute. 54 minutes into the match, U21 Venezuela's Renato Nunez-Tesheira sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Melquiades Amor narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Iván Sotomayor had several of the U21 Venezuela's defenders around him in the penalty area when he, after 55 minutes of play, received a pass and succeeded in some way to shoot a shot which went straight ahead into goal. This resulted in a 0-1 score and a disappointed Dorio Laje as he didn't even see the shot coming. Melquiades Amor stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Renato Nunez-Tesheira's shot from short distance in the 63rd minute. Melquiades Amor came out of the goal in the 70th minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Venezuela's Renato Nunez-Tesheira. But to his dismay, Renato Nunez-Tesheira quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. U21 Peru made a substitution. Michel Platini replaced Lucca Payet. U21 Venezuela made a substitution. Xandro Zubillaga replaced Lucio Oquendo. U21 Peru's Dennis Bergkamp was substituted for Iván Sotomayor. 74 minutes into the match, U21 Peru's goal looked a bit too open when Renato Nunez-Tesheira came free, but Melquiades Amor reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Paskal Baragaño fell near the penalty area in the 82nd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Venezuela's protests and gave Paskal Baragaño a yellow card for diving instead. Paskal Baragaño hit a great freekick 82 minutes into the match. Dennis Bergkamp could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 84th minute of the match, but Dorio Laje made a huge save. Dorio Laje took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Dennis Bergkamp, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The corner led U21 Peru's Egoitz Ferreiro to fire away a dangerous shot which Dorio Laje despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Melquiades Amor showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Xandro Zubillaga, who was totally free with the ball in the 97th minute. U21 Venezuela were disappointed that they only managed a draw, even though they felt themselves to be the better team.
